Why Meghan Markle, NOT Kate, could have been destined to wear Princess Diana's engagement ring

When Prince William popped the question to then Kate Middleton, the nation was touched by his decision to use his late mother Princess Diana's engagement ring.

However, it's emerged that the famous sapphire wasn't always destined for Williams wife, and that's because his little brother Prince Harry actually chose to keep it when their mother tragically died in 1997.

But ever the gent, he gifted it to Wills when he proposed to Kate.

 

 

So with rumours swirling that he and girlfriend Meghan Markle are about to announce their engagement any day now, she'll have to make do with another priceless jewel from the vaults.

Instead, it's assumed he'll offer the TV actress another, lesser-known ring from the Princess of Wales' collection, with one possible option being an emerald choker gifted by the Queen.

Another is a set of sapphire jewels received as a wedding present from the Saudi Crown Prince.

Although both of royal significance, neither are likely to match the popularity of the blue sapphire ring which she was given from Prince Charles to mark their engagement.

It became the subject of much attention when it prominently featured in the official photograph taken after the announcement of their engagement in 1981.
