Լատվիացի ռեժիսոր Վիեստուրս Կայրիշսը վավերագրական ֆիլմը սիմֆոնիայի է նմանեցնում: Վավերագրական ֆիլմերի սիրահարն իր հետ Հայաստան է բերել վերջին՝ «Հավալուսնը անապատում» կինոնկարը: Այն ընդգրկված է երևանյան «Ոսկե ծիրան» 12-րդ միջազգային կինոփառատոնի Միջազգային վավերագրական մրցույթում:

«Ֆիլմը վավերագրական է: Այն Լատգալեն երկրամասի մասին է, մի երկրի մասին է, որտեղ մարդիկ մի փոքր տարբերվում են: Այս ֆիլմն ինձ համար շատ կարևոր է, որովհետև ես հիմնականում վավերագրական ֆիլմեր չեմ նկարահանում, լիամետրաժ ֆիլմեր եմ նկարահանում: Այն բազմաթիվ կինոփառատոնների է մասնացել»,- նշեց Վիեստուրս Կայրիշսը:

Ռեժիսորի խոսքով՝ իր բարեկամներից մեկը մահացել էր, և ըստ կաթոլիկ եկեղեցու ավանդույթի՝ կանայք եկել և ամբողջ գիշեր երգում էին մահացածի կողքին:

«Այդ երգի մեջ ասվում էր՝ «Ես միայնակ եմ, ինչպես հավալուսնը անապատում»: Ինձ համար շատ տարօրինակ էր, որովհետև Լատգալեում ոչ անապատ կա, ոչ հավալուսն, և կանանցից ոչ ոք նման բան չէր տեսել»,-նշեց նա՝ խոսելով ֆիլմի վերնագրի մասին:

Վիեստուրս Կայրիշսի խոսքով՝ ֆիլմում իր մանկության հիշողություններն են:

«Ուզում էի ներկայացնել այս երկրամասի պատմությունը, որովհետև այն խիստ կրոնական է : Ուզում էի պատկերացնել կյանքի և մահվան կոնֆլիկտը, ինչպես նաև մարդու և Աստծո կոնֆլիկտը: Ինձ համար կարևոր է Աստծո և հավատի թեման: Չեմ հավատում այն մարդկանց, ովքեր կուրծք են ծեծում և ասում՝ ես հավատացյալ եմ»,-նշեց նա:

Լատգալեն երկրամաս է Եվրամիության արևելյան ծայրին: Երբեմն թվում է, թե դա հողակտոր է ջրի մեջտեղում: Երբեմն էլ թվում է, թե ավազածածկ անապատ է՝ փրկված մարդկանցով լի տապանով: Ֆիլմը ներկայացնում է մի եզերք, որն արարել են  մարդիկ կյանքի և զուտ քրիստոնեական հարության հոգևոր ու ֆիզիկական ծայրահեղ դրսևորումներով:

Վիեստուրս Կայրիշսը 1997-ին Լատվիայի մշակույթի ակադեմիայի կինոյի և թատրոնի բաժինն ավարտելուց հետո նկարահանել է մի շարք խաղարկային և վավերագրական ֆիլմեր: Կայրիշսի ռեժիսորական առաջնեկը «Գնացքը» կարճամետրաժ ֆիլմն էր: «Հարսանիք» կարժամետրաժ դրաման նրան բերեց «Մեծ բյուրեղ» ազգային կինոմրցանակը: 2001-ին նրա «Կախարդական սրինգ» կարճամետրաժ ֆիլմը մասնակցեց 49-րդ Վենետիկյան բիենալեին:
