Ծնվելուց հետո Օուշի Վարնին չէր կարողանում փակել բերանը, իսկ լեզուն միշտ դուրս ընկած էր։ Բժիշկները շտապեցին հանգստացնել ծնողներին՝ ասելով, որ դա շուտով կանցնի։ Բայց ժամանակը գնում էր, իսկ փոքրիկի լեզուն ոչ մի կերպ հետ չէր գնում։ Այդպես շարունակվեց 3 ամիս։ Դրանից հետո, չվստահելով բժիշկների խոսքերին, ծնողները դիմեցին ավելի փորձառու մասնագետների, ովքեր աղջնակի մոտ Բեքվիտ–Վիդեմանի սինդրոմ ախտորոշեցին, որը գենետիկական շեղում էր։

Այդ համախատանիշը հանդիպում է 13.700 երեխայից 1–ի մոտ։ Այն ուղղորդվում է մի շարք կողմնակի ազդեցություններով, որոնց թվում են մարմնի տարբեր մասերի ոչ համաչափ զարգացումն ու շնչառության հետ կապված խնդիրները։ Իսկ դա հենց այն էր, ինչով տառապում էր Օուշին։

Դեռևս ուլտրաձայնային հետազոտության նկարներում երևում էր, որ փոքրիկի բերանը փակ չէ` չափազանց մեծ լեզվի պատճառով։ Չհասկանալով, որ աղջնակը հիվանդ է, ուլտրաձայնային հետազոտությունն անցկացնող բժիշկը երեխայի մորն ասել էր.
