 Չնայած կառավարությունը պատրաստվում է երկարացնել Մեծամորի ատոմակայանի գործող բլոկի շահագործման ժամկետը, այնուհանդերձ դա ամենևին չի նշանակում, թե Հայաստանը հրաժարվում է նոր ատոմային կայան կառուցելու մտադրությունից։ Նոր ԱԷԿ-ի կառուցման մասին Հայաստանը հայտարարեց տարիներ առաջ և այդ նախաձեռնությունը շարունակում է մնալ օրակարգո ւմ։ Մեկընդմիշտ պետք է գիտակցել, որ Հայաստանը ատոմային էլեկտրակայանին այլընտրանք չունի։ Պարզապես տարբեր պատճառներով վերջին շրջանում գործընթացը դանդաղել է։

Նախ՝ դրան խանգարեց Ֆուկուշիմայի վթարը, որից հետո ամբողջ աշխարհում փոխվեց վերաբերմունքը ատոմային էներգիայի օգտագործման նկատմամբ։ Դրանից հետո գտնվեցին նույնիսկ երկրներ, այդ թվում՝ նաև Գերմանիան, որոնք որոշեցին հրաժարվել ատոմային էներգիայի օգտագործումից։ Թեեւ երկար ժամանակ չպահանջվեց հակառակում համոզվելու համար։

Ինչպես նախկինում, այնպես էլ այժմ ատոմային էներգիան շարունակում է համարվել էլեկտրաէներգիայի ամենաարդյունավետ, որակյալ, հուսալի և էժան ռեսուրսներից մեկը։ Ինչպես հաղորդում է «Արմենպրես»-ը, ՀՀ էներգետիկայի և բնական պաշարների նախարարության տարածած հայտարարության մեջ նշվում է, որ Հայաստանը ևս չի պատրաստվում հրաժարվել դրա օգտագործումից։ «Դեռևս 2013թ. ՀՀ նախագահի կարգադրությամբ հաստատված է «ՀՀ էներգետիկ անվտանգության ապահովման հայեցակարգը», իսկ կառավարության 2014թ. որոշմամբ՝ «ՀՀ էներգետիկ անվտանգությաÕ ¶ ապահովման հայեցակարգի դրույթների իրականացումն ապահովող 2014-2020թթ. միջոցառումների ծրագրի ժամանակացույցը»: Այս երկու փաստաթղթերը ուղենշային են և անկախ ամեն ինչից, մինչև 2027թ. Հայաստանը պետք է ունենա նոր ատոմային բլոկ:

Պարզապես ատոմակայանի գործող բլոկի շահագործման ժամկետի երկարացումը ստեղծում է հնարավորություններ մեկ անգամ ևս մանրակրկիտ դիտարկելու նոր ԱԷԿ-ի կառուցման ծրագիրը։ Դրա համար Հայաստանը երկու-երեք տարի ժամանակ ունի։ Այդ ընթացքում կուսումնասիրվեն այն նոր տեխնոլոգիական լուծումները, որոնք առաջարկում է շուկան։ 

Ինչպես հայտնի է, ի սկզբանե նախատեսված էր ունենալ մինչև 1000 մեգավատանոց բլոկ:  Սակայն Հայաստանի էներգահամակարգի ռեժիմային գործոններով պայմանավորված՝ այժմ նպատակահարմար են համարվում ավելի փոքր հզորությունները: Խոսքը մինչև 600 մեգավատանոց հզորությամբ բլոկի մասին է։ Ակնկալվում է, որ առաջիկա տարիների ընթացքում կլինեն նոր և ավելի արդիական տեխնոլոգիաներ՝ այդպիսի բլոկ կառուցելու համար»,-նշված է նախարարության հայտարարության մեջ։
