Համաձայն բուդդայական առասպելի, ուդումբարա ծաղիկը ծաղկում է յուրաքանչյուր 3000 տարին մեկ անգամ: Վերջին անգամ այն ծաղկել էր Բուդդայի ծնունդից առաջ, իսկ վերջին 20 տարիներին նրա ծաղկմանը հետևում և սպասում են ամբողջ աշխարհում: Ասում են, որ այն ազդարարում է մեծ իմաստունի կամ լուսավորչի գալուստը:

Այս փոքրիկ անուշահոտ ծաղիկն ունի շատ բարակ, բայց չափազանց ամուր ցողուն: Մարդիկ, ովքեր հայտանբերել են ուդումբարան, հաղորդել են, որ այն չի թոշնում երկար ժամանակ և անուշ բուրմունք է արտադրում: «Ուդումբարա» բառը ծագում է սանսկրիտից և նշանակում է «երկնքի ծաղիկ»:
