Ծխելն ու ոգելից խմիչքի չարաշահումը համարվում են քաղցկեղի զարգացման հիմնական պատճառները, սակայն վերջերս գիտնականները հայտնաբերել են, որ Մարդու պապիլլոմայի հարուցիչը (ՄՊՀ) նույնպես քաղցկեղածին հատկություն ունի ու կարող է քաղցկեղի որոշ տեսակների պատճառ դառնալ: Օրալ սեքսի ժամանակ ՄՊՀ-ն, որը սովորաբար սեռական ճանապարհով է փոխանցվում, կարող է հայտնվել զուգընկերներից մեկի բերանում ու դառնալ կոկորդի քաղցկեղի (որը մի քանի տարի առաջ ախտորոշվել էր հանրահայտ դերասան Մայքլ Դուգլասի մոտ) կամ վզի քաղցկեղի զարգացման պատճառ:

Հետաքրքիր է, որ կոկորդի քաղցկեղն ավելի հաճախ տղամարդկանց մոտ է հանդիպում, իսկ կանանց մոտ ՄՊՀ-ն հաճախ դառնում է արգանդի վզիկի քաղցկեղի զարգացման պատճառ: Գիտությանը նաեւ հայտնի են դեպքեր, երբ այդ վիրուսի պատճառով տղամարդկանց մոտ զարգացել է առնանդամի քաղցկեղ:

Հետազոտությունը, որի մասին հիշատակեցինք, ցույց է տվել, որ մարդու բերանում ՄՊՀ-16–ի ( հարուցիչի՝ գիտությանը հայտնի քաղցկեղածին 15 շտամմներից մեկի) առկայությունն իրոք դառնում է կոկորդի քաղցկեղի զարգացման պատճառ: Ավելին, այդ վիրուսն ունեցողների մոտ, ինչպես նշում են Albert Einstein College of Medicine–ի (Նյու Յորք) գիտնականները, քաղցկեղի պոտենցիալ մահացու տեսակը 22 անգամ ավելի հաճախ է զարգանում, քան այդ վիրուսով չվարակվածների մոտ:

Դա ապացուցելու համար, գիտնականները հետազոտել են 97 000 մարդու բերանից վերցված քսուկներ: Հետազոտությունը սկսելու պահին այդ մարդիկ քաղցկեղ չեն ունեցել: 4 տարվա ընթացքում 132 մասնակցի մոտ ախտորոշվել է գլխի ու վզի քաղցկեղ: Այդ մարդկանց մեծ մասի մոտ գիտնականները հայտնաբերել են ՄՊՀ:

Հիշեցնենք, որ մեկ այլ հետազոտություն, որը հրապարակվել էր The New England Journal of Medicine–ում, ցույց է տվել, որ ՄՊՀ-ով վարակվածների մոտ կոկորդի ու բերանի խոռոչի քաղցկեղով հիվանդանալու հավանականությունը մեծանում է 32 անգամ:
