ԱՄՆ-ում արձանագրվել է սեռական ճանապարհով Զիկա վիրուսով վարակվելու առաջին դեպքը: Այս մասին տեղեկացրել են Տեխաս նահանգի բժիշկները: Ավելի վաղ բժիշկները կարծում էին, թե այս վտանգավոր վիրուսը տարածվում է միայն մոծակների միջոցով, սակայն պարզվում է, որ այն ավելի վտանգավոր է, քան ենթադրվում էր: Չնայած Զիկա վիրուսը հայտնաբերվել է դեռևս 1947-ին, Ուրուգվայում, սակայն մինչ օրս ինչպես այդ, այնպես էլ շատ այլ տրոպիկական վիրուսների դեմ պատվաստանյութ չի մշակվել: Ներկայիս բռնկումը պատճառ հանդիսացավ, որ այն հայտնվի Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպության (ԱՀԿ) ուշադրության կենտրոնում, իսկ փետրվարի 1-ին Ժնևում կայացած ԱՀԿ արտահերթ նիստի ժամանակ մասնագետները մտահոգություն հայտնեցին, որ այն կարող է սպառնալիք դառնալ ոչ միայն Հարավային, Կենտրոնական և Հյուսիսային Ամերիկայի երկրների, այլև ողջ երկրագնդի ազգաբնակչության համար:

ԱՀԿ-ի տեղեկացմամբ՝ դեռևս պարզ չէ, թե Զիկայով վարակվելուց հետո որքան ժամանակ է կազմում ինկուբացիոն շրջանը, սակայն, մասնագետների կարծիքով, այն ի հայտ է գալիս վարակվելուց մի քանի օր հետո: Վիրուսով վարակվածության նախանշանները նման են այլ վիրուսներով վարակվելու նշաններին՝ բարձր ջերմություն, մաշկի ցան, կոնյուկտիվիտ, մկանացավ, հոդացավեր և գլխացավ: Այն տևում է 2-ից 7 օր: Զիկան տարածվում է Aedes տիպի մոծակների միջոցով, որոնք տարածում են նաև դենգե, չիկունգունյե և դեղին տենդերը, որոնք համարվում են սուր վարակիչ հիվանդություններ:

ԱՀԿ-ի տեղեկացմամբ՝ Զիկայի վիրուսը նաև կարող է խաչաձև ռեակցիայի մեջ է մտնել դենգե, չիկունգունյե և դեղին տենդերի վիրուսային մանրէների հետ և մուտացիայի ենթարկվել: Այդ է պատճառը, որ Զիկայով վարակվածության դեպքերի հայտնաբերումն այնքան էլ հեշտ չէ: Այդ դեռևս անհասկանալի վիրուսով չվարակվելու համար ԱՀԿ-ն խորհուրդ է տալիս հնարավորինս զգուշանալ մոծակների խայթոցներից, կրել երկար թևերով բաց գույների հագուստ և մոծակների բները վերացնելու համար ժամանակ առ ժամանակ ախտահանել բնակարանը: Մասնագետները խորհուրդ են տալիս նաև ուշադիր լինել սենյակային պայմաններում աճեցվող բույսերի նկատմամբ և դրանց խնամքը ճիշտ կազմակերպել, քանի որ բարձր խոնավության առկայությունը սովորաբար գրավիչ միջավայր է մոծակների համար:
