Հավանականության մեծ բաժին կա նրանում, որ ապագա երեխայի սեռը որոշում է հնագույն վիրուսը: Նման եզրակացության են հանգել ԱՄՆ-ի Յեյլի համալսարանի գիտնականները, հայտնում է Daily Mail-ը` վկայակոչելով Nature գիտական ամսագրին:

Մարդու գենոմի մոտ 40 տոկոսը հնագույն վիրուսների ներխուժման հետքեր են, որը տեղի է ունեցել տասնյակ միլիոնավոր տարիների ընթացքում: Վիրուսը, որի մասին խոսում ենք, համեմատաբար վերջերս է ինտեգրվել կաթնասունների ԴՆԹ-ին` մոտ   1,5 մլն տարի առաջ:

Գիտնականները պարզել են, որ կա մի մեխանիզմ, որը սաղմին թույլ է տալիս Х քրոմոսոմի վրա «անջատել» այդ վիրուսը, հենց դա է որոշում ապագա երեխայի սեռը:  Նրանք նաեւ վերլուծել են այդ մեխանիզմի հիմքը: Եթե համապատասխան մոլեկուլը մնում է նորմալ մակարդակում,  Х քրոմոսոմն ակտիվ է մնում, իսկ դա նշանակում է, որ աղջիկները եւ տղաները կծնվեն հավասար համամասնությամբ: Իսկ եթե նշիչի քանակը կտրուկ ավելանում է, արական սեռի առանձնյակներ երկու անգամ ավելի շատ են ծնվում, քան իգական:  Ամենից հաճախ, այդ վիրուսի մնացորդներն ակտիվ չեն: Բայց գիտնականները ենթադրում են, որ վիրուսը կարող էր, ի թիվս այլ բաների, կառավարել կաթնասունների էվոլյուցիայի գործընթացը:  

Բացի այդ, գիտնականները վիրուսի աշխատանքը ճնշելու անսովոր մեխանիզմ են հայտնաբերել: Այն կապված է էպիգենետիկ ժառանգականության հետ  (այն գեների էքսպրեսիայի փոփոխության, որոնք կապված չեն ԴՆԹ հաջորդականության հետ): Մոդիֆիկացիան իրականացվում է մեթիլային կապի շնորհիվ, որը հավելվում է ադենինին: Ավելի վաղ համարվում էր, որ կաթնասունների գեները կարող են անջատել միայն ցիտոզինի մոդիֆիկացիաները: 

Հետազոտողները հույս ունեն այս մեխանիզմը կիրառել քաղցկեղի դեմ պայքարում. հայտնի է, որ վերջինս եւս օրգանիզմում տարածվելու համար հնագույն վիրուսն է օգտագործում: 

«Սաղմերից բացի, այդ վիրուսն ակտիվ է նաեւ ուռուցքներում եւ նյարդային  բջիջներում:  Բայց նրա մեխանիզմը մի եղանակով է ազդում կաթնասունների վրա եւ ճիշտ հակառակ եղանակով` մնացած բոլորի վրա:  Օրինակ, ասկարիդների եւ մրգի դրոզոֆիլ ճանճերի մոտ այն ակտիվացնում է որոշակի գեներ, ոչ թե ճնշում է դրանք:  Ինչո՞ւ է այդպես: Լավ հարց է:  Էվոլյուցիան հաճախ նույն մեթոդն է օգտագործում տարբեր նպատակների համար: Սա հենց այդ դեպքն է», - ասում է հետազոտության հեղինակներից մեկը` Էնդրյու Սյաոն Յեյլի համալսարանի գենետիկայի բաժանմունքից:
