Now There's an iPhone 6 Challenge to Test If You're "Skinny Enough"
LifestyleWant to know the latest, most ridiculous trend on the Internet right now? The iPhone 6 knees challenge is going viral in China, where women are using iPhones to cover their knees in order to prove that their legs are "skinny." This is yet another bizarre body-shaming trend that needs to stop.
A post on Weibo, a Chinese social media app, says, "It has become a new generation of standard legs." According to Mic, the post has over 84 million views and 72,000 comments.
This incredibly pointless and unhealthy trend is another in a line of similar viral "challenges" that have surfaced recently, like the A4 paper fitness challenge, the #UnderBoobChallenge, and the #BellyButtonChallenge. It's a shame that women are being encouraged by a challenge that literally means nothing about their bodies.
Benjamin Bedford, MD, told Teen Vogue that the size of your knees actually has no correlation to your body weight. "The knees are bone and cartilage, and those are fixed size, so there's not much to do to change the knee's size," he said. "Just above the knee cap is the quadriceps muscle, so to get your knees small enough, you'd actually need reduced muscle mass. When you diet excessively, you'd be losing a lot of muscle mass, and not changing the size of the bone. The other muscle groups are used to flex, and if you used exercise to limit your weight, you could limit the tissue, but you'd still have the same size knee. So to shrink a knee, you'd literally need to fast, in an unhealthy way."
You can be skinniest person alive and your knees can still be bigger than an iPhone 6. So, can someone please tell me why is this even being entertained?
