Քիանու Ռիվզը ծնվել է պրոբլեմատիկ ընտանիքում. հայրը նրանց լքել է, երբ տղան 3 տարեկան էր, ապա ոստիկանությունը հորը ձերբակալել է` թմրանյութեր վաճառելու համար: Նրա մայրը սկզբում տեղափոխվել է Ավստրալիա, ապա ԱՄՆ և Կանադա: Այդ ընթացքում Քիանուն մի քանի խորթ հայր է ունեցել: Տեղափոխությունների պատճառով` տղան հաճախ էր փոխում դպրոցը, իսկ դիսլեկսիան էլ ավելի էր բարդացնում ուսուցումը: Մանուկ հասակում նա երազում էր հոկեիստ դառնալ, սակայն վնասվածքը խանգարում է:

Քիանու Ռիվզի ընկերուհին` Ջեննիֆեր Սայմը մահացել է ավտովթարից, իսկ դրանից կարճ ժամանակ առաջ նրանք կորցրել էին երեխային: Այդ ժամանակից ի վեր` Ռիվզը ոչ մեկի հետ լուրջ հարաբերություններ չի ունեցել: Իսկ նրա լավագույն ընկերը` Ռիվեր Ֆենիքսը մահացել է թմրանյութերի չարաշահումից:

Ասում են, որ նա հրաժարվում է խոշոր դերերից, եթե կերպարը շատ դաժան է: Ժամանակին Ռիվզը 2 միլիոն դոլարով կրճատել է իր հոնորարը, որպեսզի Ալ Պաչինոն կարողանա խաղալ «Սատանայի փաստաբանը» ֆիլմում: Հետագայում նա այդպես է վարվել նաև Ջին Հեքմանի համար:

Մի անգամ երկու երիտասարդ ապօրինի գնացել էին Լոս Անջելեսի HOLLYWOOD հայտնի տառերի մոտ և ետդարձին պատահմամբ հայտնվում են Քիանուի տան բակում, որտեղ դերասանը Մետալիկա էր լսում և զբաղված էր իր մոտոցիկլով: Երիտասարդները հարցնում են, թե ինչպես կարելի է այնտեղից դուրս գալ և տաքսի բռնել: Ռիվզը հանգիստ ցույց է տալիս ելքը և ներողություն է խնդրում, որ անձամբ չի կարող նրանց տեղ հասցնել, քանի որ չափազանց կեղտոտվել է:

Հիշենք նաև նրա խոսքերը. «Լուսանկարը կարող է ավելին ասել, քան հազարավոր բառերը, բայց դրանցից ոչ մեկն էլ ճշմարիտ չի լինի: Ես բացարձակ երջանիկ մարդ եմ»:
