Հղի կինը սննդին բոլորովին այլ կերպ է վերբերվում, և սկզբում հնարավոր չէ հասկանալ` ինչպես նրա վիճակը կանդրադառնա ախորժակին և գաստրոնոմիկ նախասիրություններին: Ոմանք սկսում են պարզապես ուտել ձեռքի տակ ընկած ամեն բան, մյուսները նույնիսկ սառնարանը չեն բացում, քանի որ սովի զգացում չունեն, կամ տառապում են ստամոքսի հետ կապված խնդիրներից:  Ցանկությունները փոխվում են հաճախ ու կտրուկ: Գիտնականները նաև նկատել են, որ ապագա մայրիկի սննդային նախասիրությունները կապված են կոնկրետ երկրում ձևավորված սովորույթների հետ: Այսպես՝ ԱՊՀ երկրների կանայք հղիության ընթացքում հաճույքով աղի  սննդամթերք են ուտում, ֆրանսուհիներն ու եվրոպական այլ երկրների կանայք՝ քաղցր և ճարպոտ:
