Ամերիկուհի Կորի Սալչերտը երկար տարիներ որպես բուժքույր է աշխատել և օգնել է բժիշկներին բուժել մարդկանց: Բայց հինգ տարի առաջ նա ինքն էր շատ ծանր հիվանդացել: Բժիշկներին հաջողվեց փրկել նրա կյանքը, սակայն նրա առողջական վիճակն արդեն թույլ չէր տալիս, որպեսզի նա շարունակի իր աշխատանքը: Այդ ժամանակ Կորին որոշեց, որ, քանի որ նա այլևս չի կարող փրկել մարդկանց, ապա ամեն հնարավոր բան կանի, որպեսզի թեթևացնի նրանց տառապանքը:

Նրա մոտ միտք ծագեց, օգնել մահացու հիվանդ երեխաներին, որոնցից հրաժարվել էին ծնողները: Քանի որ նրանք ամենաշատն ունեն սիրո և հոգատարության կարիք:

«Ես ոչ մի դեպքում չեմ քննադատում ծնողներին, ովքեր հրաժարվել են իրենց երեխաներից: Բուժքույր լինելով՝ ես հասկացել եմ, թե որքան ուժ է պահանջում մահամերձ մարդկանց խնամելը: Բայց երեխաները մեղավոր չեն, որ իրենց նման ճակատագիր է բաժին հասել: Այդ պատճառով էլ, ես որոշեցի նրանց օգնել ինչ-որ կերպ», – ասում է Կորին:

2012 թվականին Կորին իր տուն տարավ մի աղջկա, ով լույս աշխարհ էր եկել ուղեղի շատ ծանր թերությունով: Ծնողներն անմիջապես հրաժարվել էին նրանից, և փոքրիկը նույնիսկ անուն չուներ: Կորին նրան Էմիլին անվանեց և հոգ տարավ աղջկա մասին 50 օր շարունակ…

Աղջկա մահից հետո, Կորին և իր ամուսինը հստակ որոշեցին, որ այդուհետ իրենց կյանքը նվիրելու են մահվան դատապարտված երեխաների խնամքին: Նրանք մի հյուրատուն ստեղծեցին «Հույսի տուն» անունով: Այդտեղ հայտնվում են մահացու հիվանդ երեխաները, ովքեր ծնողներ չունեն:

«Ես շատ ցավագին եմ տանում յուրաքանչյուր երեխայի մահը, դա կոտրում է իմ սիրտը: Ես հավատում եմ, որ մեր սրտերը նման են գունավոր ապակիների: Նրանք ամուր են և գեղեցիկ հենց այն պատճառով, քանի որ հավաքված են կտորներից, փշուրներից», – ասում է Կորին:
