12 տարի Մարտին Պիստորիուսը կաղապարված է եղել սեփական մարմնում: Բոլորը կարծում էին, որ նա անգիտակից վիճակում է՝ չի տեսնում և չի լսում  բացարձակապես ոչինչ: Վերջապես Մարտինը կարողացավ պատմել, թե ինչ է եղել իրականում…

Մարտինն ամեն ինչ տեսնում էր, լսում էր և հասկանում, սակայն չէր կարողանում ասել այդ մասին: Նա զրկվել էր խոսելու և շարժվելու ունակությունից:

Մարտինն ապրում էր Հարավային Ամերիկայում: Նա 12 տարեկան էր և լիովին առողջ: Մի անգամ դպրոցից տուն վերադառնալուց հետո Մարտինը բողոքեց վատ ինքանզգացողությունից: Տղան օրեցօր ավելի վատ էր զգում իրեն՝ մկանները թուլանում էին, և նա չէր կարողանում շարժվել: Բժիշկները հայտնեցին նրա ծնողներին, որ տղան կորցրել է կապն արտաքին աշխարհի հետ և չի հասկանում, թե ինչ է կատարվում իր շուրջ: Փաստորեն նրանք սխալվել էին: Մարտինն ասում է, որ 12 տարի գիտակից վիճակում է եղել, սակայն ոչ ոք այդ մասին չի իմացել:

Ահա թե ինչպիսին է Մարտին Պիստորիուսն այսօր: Նա կարողանում է հաղորդակցվել համակարգչի միջոցով, որը բարձրաձայնում է այն, ինչ նա տպում է:

Մի անգամ նա լսել է, թե ինչպես է մայրն ասում, որ ավելի լավ կլիներ, եթե Մարտինը մահանար:

«Գաղափար անգամ չունեի, որ նա ամեն ինչ լսում է: Ես այնքան եմ ափսոսում, որ արել եմ այդ արտահայտությունը»,- ասում է Պիստորիուսի մայրը:

Մարտինն աստիճանաբար սովորել է հաղորդակցվել: Նա տիտանական ջանքեր է գործադրել և կարողանում է կառավարել իր մարմինը: Մարտինը քոլեջ է ավարտել, վարորդական իրավունք ստացել և այժմ հատուկ ադապտացված ավտոմեքենա է վարում:

2008 թվականին նա ծանոթացել է քրոջ ընկերուհու՝ Ջոանայի հետ: 2009-ին նրանք ամուսնացել են: Մարտինը բոլորին կոչ է անում միմյանց նկատմամբ բարություն, հարգանք դրսևորել: Երբեք չի կարելի թերագնահատել գիտակցության, սիրո և հավատի ուժը: Չի կարելի դադարել երազել:
