Նարդի խաղալը Երևանի կոլորիտներից մեկը կարելի է համարել: Երևանյան բակերով և պուրակներով անցնելիս հաճախ կարելի է հանդիպել տաղավարներում նարդի խաղացող տղամարդկանց: Այս յուրահատուկ կոլորիտն ամբողջացնում է Մոսկովյան պուրակում տեղադրված «Նարդի խաղացողը» արձանը. նարդու առջև նստած տղամարդը ամեն պահի «սպասում է իր մրցակցին», որի դերում կարող է լինել մոտայակքով անցնող ցանկացած անցորդ:

Իսկ ահա երևանյան մեկ այլ գողտրիկ անկյունում` Վերնիսաժում, կարելի է տեսնել ամենատարբեր նախշերով ու փորագրություններով զարդարված նարդիներ: Նարդի վաճառող Հովհաննեսի խոսքով` նարդու գնորդները հիմնականում օտարերկրացիներն են` սփյուռքահայեր, ռուսներ, եվրոպացիներ և այլք: «Զբոսաշրջիկներին հատկապես գրավում են այն նարդիները, որոնք նախշազարդված են հայկական խորհրդանիշներով` նուռ, խաղող, Արարատ լեռը և այլն: Փայտի և փորագրության  որակով, գունային էֆեկտներով և մշակմամբ պայմանավորված` գները տատանվում են բավականին մեծ միջակայքում` 10.000 դրամից մինչև 18 մլն դրամ»-ասում է Հովհաննեսը:

Նարդի խաղալու մշակույթը խորապես տարածված է հայ ժողովրդի մեջ: Դժվար է գտնել այնպիսի հայ ընտանիք, որի տանը նարդի չլինի: Սակայն քչերը գիտեն, որ նարդին բավականին երկար ու շատ հետաքրքիր պատմություն ունի: 2004 թվականին հայտնաբերված հնագիտական վկայությունները (գտնվել է նարդի խաղալու համար նախատեսված ամենահին տախտակը` պատրաստված էբենոսափայտից, և ագաթի ու փիրուզի կտորներից հղկված խաղաքարերը) ցույց են տալիս, որ այս խաղն առաջին անգամ խաղացել են 5200 տարի առաջ հարավ-արևելյան Իրանում: Հնում նարդի խաղում էին հարթ մակերես ունեցող սովորական տախտակների վրա` որպես խաղաքարեր օգտագործելով քարի կամ ոսկորի հղկված կտորներ, իսկ որպես զառեր ծառայում էին մանր քարերը կամ փայտի կտորները: Այս խաղը խաղացել են հին եգիպտացիները, չինացիները, շումերները, հռոմեացիները և պարսիկները: Հին ձեռագրերում նարդու սիմվոլիկան բացատրվում է հետևյալ կերպ. տախտակը խորհրդանշում է տարին, յուրաքանչյուր կողմը պարունակում է 12 քար` տարվա 12 ամիսները, բոլոր 24 քարերը միասին խորհրդանշում են օրվա 24 ժամերը, իսկ սև ու սպիտակ գույները` ցերեկն ու գիշերը:

1920-60-ականներին նարդին հիմնականում վերին դասի խաղ է համարվել, որը խաղացել են հատուկ մասնավոր ակումբներում: Այնուհետև` 1960-90-ական թվականներին նարդի սկսեցին խաղալ նաև միջին խավի մարդիկ, որոնց մեջ մեծամասնություն էին կազմում երիտասարդները: Այս շրջանում նարդին լայնորեն տարածվեց Միացյալ Նահանգներում և Եվրոպայում: Այժմ նորագույն տեխնոլոգիաները հնարավորություն են տալիս նարդի խաղալ համակարգչով կամ բջջային հեռախոսով:
