39-ամյա Ջո Թոմպսոնը որոշեց տնային պայմաններում ներկել մազերը և այդ նպատակով գնեց «Schwarzkopf XXL Live» մազի ներկ։ Կինը զգուշավորություն հանդես բերեց և հետևելով ցուցումներին՝ փորձարկեց ներկը՝ համոզվելու համար, թե արդյոք ներկը մաշկի ալերգիկ ռեակցիա կառաջացնի։ Փորձարկումից հետո ալերգիկ ռեակցիա չառաջացավ, սակայն երբ կինը գլխին քսեց ներկը, նա սկսեց գլխամաշկի սուր այրոց զգալ։ Հարցը հավանաբար ներկի քանակությունն էր։ Նա արագորեն լվաց գլուխը, սակայն այրոցը չէր անցնում։

Նախքան Թոմպսոնը կպառկեր քնելու, նա հակահիստամինային պատրաստուկ ընդունեց։
Առավոտյան կինն արթնացավ ահավոր այտուցված դեմքով ու դեմքի այրվածքներով։
Կնոջն անհապաղ հիվանդանոց տեղափոխեցին, սակայն բժիշկն ասաց, որ նրա մոտ ընդամենը թեթև ալերգիկ ռեակցիա է, և հակաբիոտիկներ նշանակելուց հետո նրան տուն ուղարկեց։
Այնուամենայնիվ, Ջոի վիճակն ավելի ու ավելի էր վատանում։ Նա մի ամիս շարունակ տնից դուրս չէր գալիս։ Ի վերջո նա ակնաբույժի դիմեց, քանի որ անհանգստանում էր, որ աչքերի մշտական այտուցվածության պատճառով իր տեսողությունը կարող էր տուժել։ Նրան մի քանի հետազոտությունների ենթարկեցին և պառկեցրին հիվանդանոցում, որտեղից նա դուրս գրվեց 4 օր անց։
Կնոջ մաշկը հնարավոր եղավ վերկանգնել, սակայն նույնը չենք կարող ասել նրա հոգեվիճակի մասին։ Այս դեպքից հետո կինը սկսեց տառապել դալթոնիզմով։ Նա անընդհատ համակվում է անհանգստության ու խուճապի զգացումով։ Դա էլ դեռ բավական չէր, նրա մոտ առաջացել էագորոֆոբիա։ Թոմպսոնն ասել է.
