Եվրախորհրդարանի ղեկավարի ընտրությունների առաջին փուլը, որոնք հունվարի 17-ին կայացել են Ստրասբուրգում՝ ասամբլեայի լիագումար նստաշրջանում, չի պարզել հաղթողին: Ինչպես տեղեկացնում Է «Արմենպրես»-ը, այդ մասին հունվարի 17-ին հայտարարել Է ասամբլեայի նախագահի պաշտոնից հեռացող Մարտին Շուլցը՝ քվեարկության առաջին փուլի արդյունքներով քվեների հաշվումն ավարտելուց հետո:
 
Ինչպես հայտնել Է Շուլցը, ամենամեծ թվով ձայներ հավաքել են Եվրոպայի ժողովրդական կուսակցության (ԵԺԿ)՝ Եվրամիության առաջատար քաղաքական ուժի ներկայացուցիչ իտալացի Անտոնիո Տայանին եւ նրա հայրենակից, ազդեցությամբ երկրորդ խորհրդարանական խմբակցության՝ սոցիալիստների ղեկավար Ջանի Պիտելան:  
Տայանիի օգտին քվեարկել Է 274 պատգամավոր, Պիտելայի օգտին՝ 183: Եվս չորս այլ հավակնորդների հետ նրանք դուրս են եկել քվեարկության երկրորդ փուլ: Եվրախորհրդարանի նախագահի պաշտոնին սկզբնապես հավակնում Էին յոթ պատգամավորներ:  
 
Վեհաժողովի նոր նախագահը պետք Է ստանա ընտրողների քվեաթերթիկների բացարձակ մեծամասնությունը՝ 50 տոկոս՝ գումարած մեկ ձայն: Ընթացակարգով նախատեսված Է քվեարկության երեք փուլ: Եթե երրորդ փուլից հետո հաղթողը չորոշվի, ամենամեծ քանակությամբ ձայներ հավաքած երկու հավակնորդները կհանդիպեն չորրորդ փուլում: Այս դեպքում հաղթանակի համար պահանջվում Է հավաքել քվեների պարզ մեծամասնությունը, հաղորդել Է ՌԻԱ Նովոստին:
