Հայերի հիշողությունը ներառված է Լիոնի մշակույթի մեջ և շատ թանկ է քաղաքի համար:

Նման հայտարարությամբ հանդես եկավ Լիոնի քաղաքապետ Ժերար Կոլոմբը` քաղաքում հյուրընկալելով ՀՀ Նախագահ Սերժ Սարգսյանին, ով պաշտոնական այցով Ֆրանսիայում է:

«Ինչպես գիտեք, Ռոն գետի շրջակայքում բազմաթիվ հայեր կան, մասնավորապես Լիոնում, ովքեր փրկվել են Ցեղասպանությունից և հաստատվել այստեղ: Այդ պատճառով հայերի հիշողությունը մեզ համար շատ կենդանի է, և այն ներառված է Լիոնի մշակույթի մեջ: Մենք ցանկանում էինք նաև հարգանք ցուցաբերել այն հայերի նկատմամբ, ովքեր եկան բնակվելու մեր քաղաքում, մեծ ներդրում ունեցան քաղաքի կառուցման գործում և նպաստեցին քաղաքի զարգացմանը»,- շեշետեց Կոլոմբը:

Նրա խոսքով` հենց այդ գործոնները հաշվի առնելով Հայոց ցեղասպանության զոհերի հիշատակը հավերժացնող հուշարձանը չէր կարող լինել մի անհայտ թաղամասում, այլ պետք է լիներ կենտրոնական Բելկուր հրապարակի մոտ: «Այս հուշարձանի սյուների վրա քարեր կան, որոնք բերվել են Հայաստանի լեռներից և խորհրդանշում են հայերի հիշողությունը: Ես հայերի հետ բարեկամություն եմ անում արդեն երկար ժամանակ, համայնքին ճանաչում եմ դեռևս 1970թ-ից»,- ընդգծեց Լիոնի քաղաքապետը:
