Լույս է տեսել Հովհաննես Շիրազի «Թոնդրակեցիները» անտիպ պոեմը: Պոեմի հրատարակման հետ կապված տպագրական ծախսերը հոգալու համար ֆինանսական միջոցները հատկացվել են Գյումրու բյուջեից: Ավագանին այս որոշումն ընդունել էր դեռ փետրվարի 11-ին կայացած հերթական նիստի ժամանակ՝ մեծանուն բանաստեղծի տվյալ գործը հանրությանը որպես գրական ժառանգություն ներկայացնելու կարևորությունից ելնելով՝ հիմք ընդունելով բանաստեղծի զավակների գրությունը: Այդ նպատակով հատկացվել էր երկու միլիոն դրամ: Բանաստեղծի ծննդյան 100-ամյակին նվիրված գրքի նկարիչը Վանանդ Շիրազն է, իակ շապիկի երեսին Արա Շիրազի «Երեկոն» գործն է: Գրքի խմբագիրն ու առաջաբանի հեղինակը գրականագետ, պրոֆեսոր Սամվել Մուրադյանն է:

Պոեմը գրվել է 1954 թվականին: Պոեմում ներկայացված են 11-րդ դարի հայ իրականության ցավոտ կողմերից մեկի՝ Թոնդրակյան շարժման իրական դեպքերը: Գրքի շնորհանդեսի ժամանակ, բանաստեղծի դուստրը' Աստղիկ Շիրազը նշեց, որ գիրքը շոշափում է շատ արդիական մի թեմա՝ աղանդների թեման: «Հովհաննես Շիրազը, գրաբարով ուսումնասիրելով մեր պատմագիրներին, պարզել է, որ աղանդավորական այս շարժումը հովանավորվել է դրսից և ուղղված էր հայոց պետականության՝ մասնավորապես Բագրատունիների թագավորության դեմ, հայ եկեղեցու ու հայոց ընտանեկան սրբության դեմ: Թոնդրակեցինե րը սնվում էին դրսից, ինչպես բոլոր ժամանակների աղանդավորները: Նրանք քայքայում, քանդում էին հայ ընտանքիները, քարոզում էին կանանց համայնացում, և Հովհաննես Շիրազը, հրաշալիորեն տեսնելով այդ աղետալի երևույթի վտանգավոր հետևանքերը հայ իրականության համար, կարծես հենց այսօրվա դիրքերից, ներկայացրել է միջնադարում տեղի ունեցած աղետալի շարժման իրական պատկերը՝ հակառակ խորհրդային գաղափարախոսության և թոնդրակյան շարժումով ոգևորված ուրիշ բանաստեղծների»,- նշեց Աստղիկ Շիրազը:
