Բելգիայի վարչապետ Շառլ Միշելը հայտարարել է, որ եթե Թուրքիան որոշի մահապատժի օրենքը վերականգնելու առնչությամբ հանրաքվե անցկացնել, իրենք, ամենայն հավանականությամբ, թույլ չեն տա երկքաղաքացիություն ունեցող բելգիացի թուրքերին մասնակցել դրան:

«Բելգիան ստիպված չէ կազմակերպել այդ հանրաքվեն նաև այստեղ», - ասել է Միշելը:

Թուրքիայում մահապատիժն օրինական կիրառություն ուներ մինչև 2004 թվականը, սակայն գործնականում այն չի կիրառվել 1984-ից ի վեր:

Մահապատիժը վերականգնելու մասին խոսակցություններն ու առաջարկները երկրում սկսեցին ի հայտ գալ հուլիսի 15-ին տեղի ունեցած ռազմական հեղաշրջման անհաջող փորձից հետո, որի ժամանակ ավելի քան 300 մարդ էր զոհվել, հազարավորները` վիրավորվել:

Սակայն պատժի այս տեսակի վերականգնումը հակասական մոտեցումներ է առաջացնում երկրում, քանի որ այն նախևառաջ կարող է խոչընդոտ լինել Եվրամիության անդամ դառնալուն, ինչին Թուրքիան այդքան ձգտում է:

Ավելի վաղ Եվրոպական հանձնաժողովի նախագահ Ժան-Կլոդ Յունկերն անդրադարձել է Թուրքիայում մահապատժի հնարավոր վերականգնմանը և հայտարարել, որ եթե Թուրքիան գնա այդ քայլին՝ այլևս երբեք տեղ չի ունենա եվրոպական ընտանիքում:
