Տավուշում սեպտեմբերի 30-ին հանդիսավորությամբ նշվելու է Վարագա Սուրբ խաչի տոնը: Քրիստոնեական բոլոր եկեղեցիներն ամեն տարի մեծ հանդիսավորությամբ նշում են Խաչին նվիրված տոները: Բայց ի տարբերություն մյուս եկեղեցիների, Հայ Եկեղեցին ունի նաև Խաչին նվիրված զուտ ազգային մի տոն, որը հայտնի է Վարագա Սուրբ Խաչ անունով: Այն միշտ տոնում են Խաչվերացից երկու շաբաթ հետո հանդիպող կիրակի օրը:

Ագաթանգեղոս պատմիչի վկայության համաձայն՝ Հռիփսիմյանց կույսերը, փախչելով Հռոմից, գալիս ապաստան են գտնում Վանա լճից հարավ-արևելք ընկած Վարագա լեռան վրա: Սբ. Հռիփսիմեն իր կրծքին կախած Տիրոջ խաչափայտի սրբազան մասունքն ապահովության համար հանձնում է աղոթող ճգնավորներին և խնդրում, որ պահեն այն քարայրներից մեկում: Սուրբ մասունքն այդպես պահված մնում է մինչև 7-րդ դարը: 653 թվականին, երբ Թոդիկ ճգնավորն իր Հովել աշակերտի հետ աղոթում էր Վարագա լեռան վրա և խնդրում, որ Աստված ողորմություն անի և ցույց տա Սբ. Խաչի տեղը, հանկարծ 12 լուսեղեն սյուներ են երևում լեռան շուրջը, իսկ նրանց միջև փայլում է լուսավոր Խաչի նշանը, որը բերվել է Հայոց աշխարհ:

Խորհրդային տարիներին հայ եկեղեցին չէր նշում Վարագա Սուրբ Խաչի տոնը, սակայն անկախության տարիներին «Տավուշ» հայրենակցական միությունը և Հայ առաքելական եկեղեցու Տավուշի թեմի առաջնորդարանը որոշեցին համատեղ ամեն տարի Նոր Վարագավանքում հանդիսավորությամբ նշել այն: «Արմենպրես»-ի մամուլի սրահում հրավիրված ասուլիսում «Տավուշ» հայրենակցականմիության փոխնախագահ, պրոֆեսոր Լավրենտի Միրզոյանը նշեց, որ այն արդեն ավանդական է դարձել:

«Մեկ օր առաջ` սեպտեմբերի 30-ին Էջմիածնից Խաչափայտի մասունքները տեղափոխվելու են Տավուշի մարզ, սկզբում կհանգրվանեն Դիլիջանում, կկատարվի օրհնության արարողություն, այնուհետև Իջևան, Նոյեմբերյան, Բերդ: Արդեն հոկտեմբերի 1-ին, երբ կանցկացվեն հիմնական միջոցառումները, մասունքները կտեղափոխվեն Նոր Վարագավանք, այնտեղ կմատուցվի պատարագ, կլինի օրհնության արարողություն»,-ասաց Լավրենտի Միրզոյանը՝ նշելով, որ նախատեսված են մշակութային, մարզական միջոցառումներ:

Լավրենտի Միրզոյանի խոսքով, հասարակության շրջանում այս տոնն իր ուրույն տեղն ունի: Շատերը կազմակերպված այցելում են Տավուշ՝ Վարագա Սուրբ խաչի տոնին մասնակցելու համար:
