Հնդկաստանում շատ վատ է զարգացած շտապօգնության ծառայությունը: Շատ դեպքերում հիվանդները ստիպված են հիվանդանոց հասնել ինքնուրույն:

Մումբայ քաղաքում բնակվող Վիջայ Տհակուրուն քաջածանոթ է նշված խնդրին:

Նա հրաժարվել է իր բարձր վարձատրվող աշխատանքից և դարձել տաքսու վարորդ՝ անհրաժեշտության դեպքում մարդկանց անվճար հիվանդանոց տեղափոխելու համար:

«Մի քանի տարի առաջ կինս վիժեց: Հարկարվոր էր նրան արագորեն հասցնել հիվանդանոց, բայց տաքսու վարորդները հրաժարվեցին տեղափոխել: Ես բավականաչափ գումար չունեի այդ պահին… Իսկ նրանցից մի քանիսը մտածում էին սրահի մաքրության մասին»,- ասում է նա:

Վիջայն ինժեներ էր մեքենաշինական Larsen & Toubro հայտնի ընկերությունում: Այդ աշխատանքի մասին նրա բազմաթիվ հայրենակիցներ ուղղակի կարող էին երազել: Բայց վերոգրյալ դեպքը փոխել էր նրա աշխարհայացքը և ստիպել դառնալ տաքսու վարորդ:

«Հիմա ես վաստակում եմ ամսական մոտ 150 դոլար: Բայց ինձ համար կարևորը ոչ թե փողն է, այլ մարդկանց օգնելը: Բոլոր ուղևորներիս այցեքարտ եմ տրամադրում և ասում, որ ծայրահեղ դեպքերում նրանք կարող են ապավինել իմ օգնությանը: Նույնիսկ եթե ինձ զանգահարում են ուշ գիշերին, չեմ մերժում ոչ ոքի և գումար չեմ վերցնում»:

Գործընկերները Վիջային ուղղակի ատում են, բայց այդ վերաբերմունքը նրան չի հետաքրքրում. «Ես 74 տարեկան եմ, խոսում եմ 11 լեզվով: Երեխաներս աշխատում են որպես ինժեներ հայտնի ընկերություններում և պետական պաշտոն զբաղեցնում բարձր ատյաններում: Բայց կյանքիս գլխավոր ձեռքբերումը համարում եմ այն, որ արդեն փրկել եմ ավելի քան 500 կյանք: Նախկին աշխատավայրում ամսական ստանում էի 950 դոլար աշխատավարձ, բայց երբեք այսքան երջանիկ չեմ եղել»:
