Ծխախոտի եւ ալկոհոլի զուգակցումը ուղեղը տառացիորեն քայքայում է: ACS Chemical Neuroscience հետազոտական նախագծի շրջանակում կատարված հետազոտության համաձայն՝ ալկոհոլի եւ ծխախոտի միաժամանակյա գործածման դեպքում դեգրադացիայի են ենթարկվում ուղեղի գրեթե բոլոր բաժինները:

Փորձի ընթացքում առնետներին ենթարկել են ալկոհոլի, ծխախոտի ծխի կամ դրանց համադրության ազդեցությանը: Պարզվել է, որ ալկոհոլը ծխախոտի համադրությամբ մեծացնում է հիպոկամպում թթվածնի ակտիվ ձեւերի մակարդակը, ինչը համահարաբերակցվում է գլխուղեղի այդ կառույցի բջիջների վնասման մեծ հավանականության հետ:

Հարկ է նշել, որ հիպոկամպը մասնակցում է զգացումների ձեւավորման մեխանիզմներին, հիշողության համախմբմանը (այսինքն՝ կարճաժամկետ հիշողությունից երկարաժամկետին անցմանը):
