Հայ Առաքելական Սուրբ եկեղեցու ծիսական կյանքում ամենակարևոր օրերից մեկը Սուրբ Պահոց շրջանի Ավագ հինգշաբթին է: Այն համարվում է նաև խոնարհության և սիրո օր, որից վախենում է նույնիսկ Սատանան և նման դեպքերում նահանջում է:

Ավագ հինգշաբթի առավոտյան մատուցվում է Սուրբ Պատարագ, ի հիշատակ Վերջին ընթրիքի ժամանակ Հաղորդության խորհրդի հաստատման: Երեկոյան կատարվում է Ոտնալվայի արարողություն, որից հետո, ըստ Ավետարանի, Քրիստոսը վերջին անգամ է ընթրում իր աշակերտների հետ՝ օրհնում է հացը, բաժանում նրանց և ասում՝ սա է իր մարմինը, իսկ օրհնելով գինին՝ ասում է՝ սա է իր արյունը:

Ավագ հինգշաբթի երեկոյան կատարվում է նաև «Խավարման» արարողություն, որը թեև Ավագ ուրբաթի խորհրդին է վերաբերում, սակայն Ավագ հինգշաբթի երեկոյան ճրագալույցից հետո է իրականացվում: Խավարման արարողությունը նվիրված է Քրիստոսի մատնությանը և չարչարանքին:

Խորանի վրա հավասար չափի 12 մոմ է վառում և մի մեծ մոմ դրվում է նրանց մեջտեղում: Արարողության ընթացքում Ավետարաններից կարդացվում են համապատասխան հատվածներ, որոնք Հիսուս Քրիստոսի հետ Գեթսեմանի պարտեզում կատարված դեպքերի մասին է:

Յուրաքանչյուր անգամ Ավետարանը կարդալիս ամեն կողմից մեկական մոմ են հանգցնում, վերջում մնում է միայն մեջտեղինը: «Տեր Երկնից» շարականից հետո հանգցնում են նաև եկեղեցու բոլոր լույսերը և ասվում է «Փառք ի բարձունս»-ը:

Մոմերը հանգցնելը խորհրդանշում է աշակերտների կողմից իրենց տիրոջը թողնելը և փախչելը, իսկ մեջտեղի մոմը խորհրդանշում է Քրիստոսին, որը մնում է մենակ և անօգնական:
