Ալմաստը բավականին թանկարժեք բնական քար է, քիչ է հանդիպում աշխարհում, իսկ ամենամեծ ալմաստներն այնքան քիչ են, որ անգամ անուններ ունեն: Ավելին՝ դրանք քաշով անգամ մեկ կիլոգրամ չեն լինում:

Իրականում այդպես չէ:

Բանն այն է, որ ներկայումս մարդկությանը հայտնի ամենամեծ ալմաստն ունի 4 000 կիլոմետր տրամագիծ և կշռում է, ոչ ավել, ոչ պակաս, 10 միլիարդ տրիլիոն կարատ: Համեմատության համար ասենք, որ մինչև այս «ալմաստը» հայտնաբերելը աշխարհի ամենամեծ ալմաստն էր համարվում «Կուլլինան», որը կշռում էր 31067 կարատ (կամ 621,35 գրամ), իսկ չափերն են 100X65X50 միլիմետր: Այս ալմաստն իր անունը ստացել է այն հայտնաբերող ընկերության նախագահի անունից, և 1907 թվականին Տրանսիլվանիայի կառավարությունը այն նվիրել է Անգլիայի թագավոր Էդուարդ 7-րդին: Այսպիսով, «Կուլլինանը» հանդիսանում էր մարդկությանը հայտնի ամենամեծ ալմաստը՝ մինչև 2004 թվականը: 1960 թվականին աստղագետների կողմից հայտնաբերվել է Ալֆա Ցենտավրա աստղաբույլում և Երկիր մոլորակից 50 լուսատարի հեռավորությամբ գտնվող BPM 37093 անվանված փոփոխական աստղը, որը բաբախող սպիտակ թզուկ էր ջրածնային մթնոլորտով և անսովոր մեծ զանգվածով. իր փոքր չափերով հանդերձ՝ նա ծանր է Արեգակից 1,1 անգամ: Ինչպես և մնացած սպիտակ թզուկները, BPM 37093 -ը կազմված է հիմնականում ածխածնից և թթվածնից, որոնք առաջանում են եռակի հելիումային ջերմամիջուկային ռեակցիայի արդյունքում հելիումի ատոմների ձուլման հետևանքով: Այս աստղը ներկայումս սառչում է, իսկ նրա մատերիան՝ կենտրոնից սկսած բյուրեղանում: Աստղի բաբախումը տեղեկություն է տալիս աստղագետներին կառուցվածքի մասին: 2004 թվականին BPM 37093-ի աստրոսեյսմոլոգիական և բաբախման հետազոտությունը համադրած բյուրեղացման տեսությունը գիտնականներին հանգեցրեցին այն մտքին, որ աստղի մոտ 90 %-ը (որոշ հետազոտություններով՝ 32 % կամ 82 %) բյուրեղացված է: Բյուրեղացման ցանկացած ծավալի դեպքում ընդհանուր բյուրեղացված զանգվածը կազմում է 5×5×10.1029 կիլոգրամ: Ենթադրվում է , որ ածխածնի բյուրեղացումը ընթացել է ծավալային-կենտրոնացված խորանարդային ցանցի տեսքով: Ստացվում է, որ այս աստղը ալմաստի կտոր է: Գիտնականները BPM 37093 -ին կոչել են «Լյուսի»՝ ի պատիվ Բիթլզի «Լյուսին երկնքում ալմաստների հետ» հանրահայտ երգի: Ի դեպ, Ջոն Լենոնը այս երգը այդպես էր կոչել իր տղայի նկարի պատճառով:
