Գիտնականները 68 տարի անց ավստրալական Ուեդերվեն քաղաքում գտնված տարօրինակ քարի կտորի անհայտ բաղկացուցիչը նույնականացրել են հանքանյութի հետ, որը Երկրի վրա բնության մեջ չի հանդիպում, տեղեկացնում է RG-ն։

Հետազոտությունը հրապարակվել է American Mineralogist ամսագրում, դրա մասին կարճ պատմում է Science Alert-ը։ Բեկորը, որի մասին է խոսքը, հայտնաբերվել է հեռավոր 1951-ին ավստրալական քաղաքում, որն այն ժամանակ «ոսկու տենդով» էր բռնված։

Սակայն միայն այժմ են Կալիֆոռնիայի տեխնոլոգիական ինստիտուտի (ԱՄՆ) հետազոտողները կարողացել պարզել նրա գաղտնիքը։ Արդի տեխնոլոգիաները թույլ են տվել որոշել, որ մետեորիտը պարունակում է երկաթի կարբիդի հազվադեպ տեսակ, որն իսկապես երբեք մինչ այդ բնության մեջ չի հանդիպել։

Այդ նյութը ստացել է էդսկոտիտ (edscottite) անվանումը՝ ի պատիվ Հավայան համալսարանի երկնային մարմինների եւ տիեզերական քիմիայի փորձագետ Էդվարդ Սքոթի։ Գիտնականներն այն անվանում են նշանակալի հայտնագործություն։ Ավելի վաղ չէր հաստատվել, որ երկաթի կարբիդի եզակի ատոմային կառուցվածքը  կարող է ստեղծվել բնական ճանապարհով։

Նման հանքանյութի սինթետիկ տարբերակը հայտնի է արդեն տասնամյակներ, այն գոյանում է երկաթը հալելուց։ Մոլորակաբան Ջեֆրի Բոնինգի կարծիքով (Ավստրալիայի ազգային համալսարան, նա չի մասնակցել հետազոտությանը)՝ հանքանյութը կարող էր առաջանալ մի ինչ-որ անհայտ հնագույն մոլորակի շիկացած միջուկում։

Նշենք, որ նախորդ հետազոտությունների ընթացքում, որոնք տեւել են ավելի քան կես դար, այդ նույն մետեորիտում հայտնաբերվել են ոսկու եւ երկաթի հետքեր, ինչպես նաեւ շատ հազվադեպ հանքանյութեր, ինչպիսին են կամացիտը, տաենիտը եւ տրոիլիտը։ Այժմ այդ ցուցակում ավելացել է էդսկոտիտը։
