Յուրաքանչյուր անձ օրական մի քանի անգամ օճառ է օգտագործում և չի էլ մտածում, թե որքան հին է այդ գյուտը: Օճառի ստեղծման պատմությունն սկսվել է Հին Բաբելոնում (մ.թ.ա. 3-րդ հազարամյակ): Դա ապացուցվում է հնագիտական պեղումներով: Հին բաբելոնացիների օճառի մեջ ենթադրաբար եղել է կասիայի յուղ, ջուր և հիմնային նյութ: Կան նաև ապացույցներ այն մասին, որ հին եգիպտացիները լոգանք են ընդունել նման միջոցներով:

19-րդ դարի վերջում օճառի պատմության վրա մեծապես ազդել են Եվրոպայում և Ամերիկայի Միացյալ Նահանգներում ձեռնարկատերերի կողմից իրականացվող լայնածավալ գովազդային արշավները: Սա զգալիորեն նպաստել է, որ օճառը մտնի մարդկանց կյանքի մեջ՝ որպես անփոխարինելի մասնիկ:

 Հետագայում՝ 20-րդ դարի կեսերից օճառը հասանելի է դարձել ամբողջ հանրությանը, և անգամ ներկայումս էլ հիգիենայի թիվ մեկ արտադրանքն է:
