Փաստաթղթաշրջանառության մեջ թղթի չափերը ևս մեծ դեր են խաղում: Մարդկության պատմության մեջ գործնական փաստաթղթերի չափսերի և դիզայնի միասնական ստանդարտների բացակայության խնդիրը հատկապես սրվել է 20-րդ դարի սկզբին: Այն ժամանակ ամբողջ աշխարհի թղթի ֆաբրիկաներից յուրաքանչյուրն ստեղծում էր ուրույն ձևաչափի թուղթ: 

Օրինակ՝ միայն Ռուսաստանում ընդհանուր առմամբ արտադրվում էր 19 ձևաչափի, ինչ պես նաև քաոսաբար ստեղծված այլ ձևաչափերի թղթեր: Հիմնականում տարբեր է եղել նաև թղթերի կողմերի հարաբերակցությունը: Օրինակ՝ մինչև 18-րդ դարի վերջը հանրաճանաչ էր այն թուղթը, որի դեպքում այդ հարաբերակցությունը 1: 1,618 էր: 

Բայց դա լավ էր միայն մեծ թերթերի համար: 1768 թվականին գերմանացի գիտնական Գեորգ Լիխտենբերգը նշել է, որ թղթի թերթը, որի կողային երկարությունները հարաբերվում են ինչպես մեկը երկուսի քառակուսի արմատին, բաղկացած կլինի երկու հավասար ուղղանկյուններից, եթե ծալվեն կիսով չափ: 

20-րդ դարի սկզբին գերմանացի ինժեներ և մաթեմատիկոս Վալտեր Պորտսմանն առաջարկել է այդ գաղափարը օգտագործել թղթի չափսերը ստանդարտացնելու համար:

 A4 ձևաչափի թղթի, ինչպես նաև A ֆորմատով բոլոր այլ ձևաչափերի պատմության սկիզբը դրվել է 1922 թվականին Գերմանիայում, երբ որպես DIN 476 ստանդարտ հաստատվել են թղթի չափերը, դրանով իսկ վերջ է տրվել այն ժամանակ օգտագործված ձևաչափերի բազմազանությանը: 1975 թվականին այն դարձել է միջազգային ստանդարտ: 

Թղթի բնօրինակ չափը, որը կոչվում է A0 ձևաչափ, ունի 1 քառակուսի մետր մակերես, որի ավելի երկար կողմի երկարությունը հավասար է երկուսի 4-րդ աստիճանի արմատին, իսկ ավելի փոքրը՝ դրա հակառակ մեծությանը, այսինքն՝ կողմերի չափերն են 1189x841 մմ: 

Մնացած չափերը նշվում են նախորդ ձևաչափի անընդմեջ բաժանումների միջոցով: Այսպիսով, A4 թղթի թերթիկն ունի 210x297 մմ չափ, իսկ դրա մակերեսը կազմում է 0,0625 մետր քառակուսի (այսինքն, A0 մեկ թերթի վրա կարելի է տեղադրել 16 հատ A4 թերթիկ): Նշենք, որ ներկայումս աշխարհում գերիշխում է երկու ձևաչափ՝ միջազգային ստանդարտ (A4 և հարակից) և հյուսիսամերիկյան ստանդարտ:

 Միացյալ Նահանգներում, Կանադայում, Մեքսիկայում և անգամ Ֆիլիպիններում, չնայած միջազգային ստանդարտի ընդունմանը, շարունակում է լայնորեն կիրառվել ամերիկյան «Letter» ձևաչափը (8,5 × 11 դյույմ կամ 216 × 279 մմ): 

Դրա առաջացման աղբյուրը ճշգրիտ հայտնի չէ, այն եկել է ավանդաբար և ներկայումս էլ շարունակում է կիրառվել։

 Նշենք նաև, որ առանձնահատկություններ ունի նաև Ճապոնիան, որտեղ մինչև օրս օգտագործվում են թղթի ավանդական ճապոնական ձևաչափերը, այդ թվում ՝ «սիրոկուբան» (788×1091 մմ) և «կիկուբան» (636×939 մմ)։
