Հավանաբար, բոլորս առավոտները նկատում ենք, որ աչքերի անկյուններում չորացած լորձի ոչ մեծ մասնիկներ են կուտակվում: Սովորաբար այդ մասնիկներն անհարմարություն չեն պատճառում: Այնուամենայնիվ, դրանց առաջացման պատճառով որոշակի տագնապ լինում է:

Բոլոր ցամաքային կաթնասունների, ներառյալ՝ մարդկանց ակնախնձորը ծածկված է եռաշերտ արցունքի թաղանթով:

Առաջին շերտը լորձի կառուցվածք ունի և ծածկում է եղջերաթաղանթը: Այդ լորձը կոչված է կապելու և պահելու խոնավությունը՝ այդպիսով ապահովելով երկրորդ շերտի հավասարաչափ բաշխումը:

Երկրորդ շերտը արցունքների լուծութ է ջրային հիմքով: Այն մշտապես խոնավեցնում է աչքերը և սնում է թթվածնով, հեռացնում է մահացած բջիջները և աչքի մեջ ընկած փոշին, նաև խոչընդոտում է վարակի ներթափանցմանը:

Երրորդ շերտը բաղկացած է յուղային նյութից: Դրա շնորհիվ արցունքների լուծույթը մնում է աչքի մակերևույթին և չի չորանում:

Արցունքի թաղանթի 3-րդ շերտը պարունակում է նյութ, որը կոչվում է մեյբում: Մարմնի նորմալ ջերմաստիճանի դեպքում մեյբումը յուղային հեղուկի կառուցվածք ունի և լրիվ թափանցիկ է: Բայց ընդամենը մեկ աստիճանով ջերմաստիճանի նվազման դեպքում այդ նյութը սկսում է պղտորվել և խտանալ:

Քնած ժամանակ մարդու մարմնի ջերմաստիճանը մի քիչ նվազում է: Դա բավարար է, որպեսզի մեյբումը սկսի չորանալ աչքերի անկյուններում, հատկապես եթե օրգանիզմն այն այն ավելորդ քանակությամբ է արտադրում:

Բացի դրանից՝ քունը թուլացնում է մկանային ազդեցությունը մեյբոմյան գեղձերի ուղիների վրա, ուստի գիշերը լորձ ավելի շատ է արտադրվում, քան ցերեկը: Այնպես որ, զարմանալի չէ, որ առավոտյան լորձի այդ չորացած մնացորդներն ենք տեսնում:
