«Հայոց պատմություն» առարկայի ուսումնասիրման շնորհիվ ձևավորվելու է ազգային դիմագիծ, պետականամետ մտածելակերպ ունեցող, հայ ժողովրդի և հայոց պետականության դերը համաշխարհային պատմության համատեքստում պատկերացնող, հայոց ազգային և համամարդկային արժեհամակարգը կրող պատասխանատու քաղաքացի։ Այս մասին տեղեկացնում է ՀՀ ԿԳՄՍ նախարարությունը։

Յուրաքանչյուր ժողովրդի պատմություն նրա անցած ուղին է, նրա կենսագրությունն ու հիշողությունը, դարերի ընթացքում նրա կերտած հոգևոր և նյութական արժեքների ամբողջությունը: Պատմության ուսումնասիրումը հիմք է յուրաքանչյուր քաղաքացու, հասարակության և պետության ապագա գործունեության: Հայոց պատմության իմացության միջոցով է ձևավորվում ազգային ինքնագիտակցությունն ու մտածողությունը, պատասխանատու և սեփական տեսակետն ու դիրքորոշումը ունեցող, կշռադատված որոշումներ կայացնող, ազգային արժեհամակարգը կրող անձ ու քաղաքացի:

Հիմնական դպրոցում սովորողները Հայոց պատմության ծրագրի շրջանակներում կծանոթանան հազարամյակների կենսագրություն ունեցող հայկական քաղաքակրթությանը, նրա առաջացման ու զարգացման օրինաչափություններին, ձեռքբերումներին, ստեղծած արժեքներին և համամարդկային նվաճումներին, ինչպես նաև՝ այդ ճանապարհին հայ ժողովրդի ունեցած դժվարություններին ու կորուստներին: Հանրակրթական միջին դպրոցի «Հայոց պատմություն» առարկայի ծրագրի կազմման հիմքում դրվել է գծային մոդելը, պահպանված է ժամանակագրական հաջորդականության սկզբունքը: Ավագ դպրոցում Հայոց պատմության ծրագրի կազմման հիմքում շեշտը դրվելու է արդի աշխարհում առկա խնդրահարույց թեմաների ուսումնասիրության՝ դրանց պատճառահետևանքային կապերի վեր հանման և քննադատական վերլուծության մեթոդի վրա:

Պատմության հետազոտման վերոնշյալ սկզբունքները կնպաստեն սովորողի կողմից պատմության համակողմանի ուսումնասիրմանը, պատմական գործընթացների և դերակատարների ամբողջական ընկալմանը (ոչ միայն քաղաքական ու տնտեսական վերնախավի ուսումնասիրմանը), ինչն էլ կնպաստի լայն մտահորիզոն և քննադատական մտածողություն ունեցող անձի ձևավորմանը:
