ՁԻԱՀ-ի դեմ պայքարի համաշխարհային օր, ՄԱԿ-ի միջազգային օր, նշվում է դեկտեմբերի 1-ին։ Առաջին անգամ հռչակվել է 1988 թվականին։ Օրը սահմանվել է ՄԻԱՎ վարակի տարածման հետևանքով առաջացած ՁԻԱՀ-ի համաճարակի մասին իրազեկվածության բարձրացման նպատակով, ինչպես նաև համարվում է այդ հիվանդության զոհերի հիշատակի օր։ Աշխարհի բազմաթիվ պետական, հասարակական և բժշկական կազմակերպություններ այս օրը անցկացնում են տեղեկատվական միջոցառումներով։

ՁԻԱՀ-ի դեմ պայքարի համաշխարհային օրվա նպատակն է բարձրացնել ՄԻԱՎ/ՁԻԱՀ-ի վերաբերյալ գլոբալ իրազեկվածությունը և համաճարակի դեմ միջազգային համերաշխության ցուցադրումը։ Այդ օրը պետական և մասնավոր հատվածի գործընկերներին տրամադրվում է պանդեմիայի կարգավիճակի մասին տեղեկատվություն տարածելու և ՄԻԱՎ/ՁԻԱՀ-ի կանխարգելման և բուժման, ինչպես նաև այդ հիվանդության բարձր տարածվածություն ունեցող երկրներում և ամբողջ աշխարհում հիվանդ մարդկանց խնամքի առավել իրատեսական հնարավորություն։

ՄԱԿ-ի ՄԻԱՎ/ՁԻԱՀ-ի միացյալ ծրագրի գնահատականներով՝ 15-49 տարեկան 35,7 միլիոն մարդ վարակված է ՄԻԱՎ-ով, որոնցից 26 միլիոնը՝ աշխատող մարդիկ են։ Եթե հաշվարկներում ներառվեն աշխատանքային տարիքի բոլոր կատեգորիաների, այդ թվում՝ մինչև 64 տարեկան անձանց տվյալները, ինչպես նաև բոլոր նրանց, ովքեր աշխատում են ոչ ֆորմալ տնտեսությունում տանը և տնից դուրս, ապա ՄԻԱՎ-ով վարակված մարդկանց թիվը, որոնք պատկանում են աշխատողների կատեգորիային կհասնի 36,5 միլիոնի։

ՁԻԱՀ-ի դեմ պայքարի համաշխարհային օրվա նախաձեռնությունն առաջին անգամ մշակվել է 1987 թվականի օգոստոսին Ջեյմս Վ. Բուննի և Թոմաս Նետերի (James W. Bunn, Thomas Netter) կողմից՝ Ժնևում Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպության ՁԻԱՀ-ի դեմ պայքարի գլոբալ ծրագրի հանրային տեղեկատվության հարցերով աշխատակիցների կողմից։ ՁԻԱՀ-ի գլոբալ ծրագրի տնօրենը համարվում է Ջոնաթան Մաննը։

Բունն առաջարկել է դեկտեմբերի 1-ը՝ արևմտյան ԶԼՄ-ներում լուսաբանումն ապահովելու համար, ինչը, նրա կարծիքով, կենսական նշանակություն է ունեցել ՁԻԱՀ-ի դեմ պայքարի համաշխարհային օրվա հաջողության համար։ Նա կարծում է, որ քանի որ 1988 թվականը ԱՄՆ-ում ընտրությունների տարի էր, զանգվածային լրատվամիջոցները կհոգան ընտրությունների լուսաբանմանը և կցանկանան թարմ պատմություն գտնել։

ՄԱԿ-ի ՄԻԱՎ/ՁԻԱՀ-ի միացյալ ծրագիրը սկսել է գործել 1996 թվականին՝ ստանձնելով ՁԻԱՀ-ի դեմ պայքարի համաշխարհային օրվա պլանավորումն ու առաջխաղացումը (առանց նախնական մեկնարկի)։

2004 թվականին ՁԻԱՀ-ի դեմ համաշխարհային արշավը դարձել է ինքնուրույն կազմակերպություն։
