«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

20-րդ դարի սկզբին Գերմանիայի Բավարիայում երկու երիտասարդ՝ ինժեներ Կարլ Ռապպը և ներքին այրման շարժիչի գյուտարարի որդի Գուստավ Օտտոն, առանձին– առանձին ստեղծեցին երկու փոքր ինքնաթիռային շարժիչների արտադրության ընկերություններ։ Հիմնադիրները ավտոմեքենաների մասին չէին էլ մտածում, դրանք քիչ էին, և դրանց կառուցվածքի անկատարությունը չէր նպաստում դրանց ժողովրդականությանը։ Սակայն ինքնաթիռային շարժիչների պահանջարկը մեծ էր։ Բացի դա, սկսված Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմը բազմաթիվ պատվերներ բերեց։

Ռապպի ընկերության գլխամասային գրասենյակը գտնվում էր Բավարիայի մայրաքաղաք Մյունխենում։ Այնտեղ էր գտնվում նաև Օտտոյի գործարանը, որտեղ օդանավերի վրա տեղադրվում էին շարժիչներ, այդ թվում՝ Ռապպի արտադրած շարժիչները։ Եվ 1917 թվականին էլ ծնվեց Bayerische Motoren Werke (Բավարիայի մոտորային գործարաններ) ընկերությունը: Այդ իրադարձությունը համարվում է BMW-ի պատմության սկիզբը։ Այսպիսով, BMW հապավումը վերծանվում է շատ պարզ` դրանք նշյալ ընկերության անվան առաջին տառերն են:

Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմի ավարտից հետո BMW-ն ծանր ժամանակներ է ապրել: Վերսալի պայմանագրով, որով վերջ դրվեց գլոբալ հակամարտությանը, Գերմանիային արգելվեց ինքնաթիռների շարժիչներ արտադրել։ BMW-ն, որն այդ ժամանակ դարձել էր բաժնետիրական ընկերություն, իր ջանքերը կենտրոնացրեց տարբեր սարքավորումների և երկաթուղային արգելակների համար ներկառուցված շարժիչների արտադրության վրա: Բոլորի համար անսպասելիորեն ամեն ինչ լավ ընթացավ, այնքան, որ ընկերությունը դարձավ գրավիչ ներդրումային տեսակետից: 1920 թվականին արգելակային Knorr-Bremse ընկերությունը, որը նախկինում տեղակայված էր Բեռլինում, գնեց BMW-ի բաժնետոմսերի վերահսկիչ փաթեթը և իր գործունեությունը տեղափոխեց Մյունխեն: BMW-ն ժամանակավորապես անհետացավ՝ որպես անկախ ընկերություն:

1922 թվականին Կամիլլո Կաստիլիոն՝ իտալա-ավստրիացի ֆինանսիստ-բանկիրը, որը Եվրոպայում հայտնի էր որպես Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմի ժամանակվա ամենահարուստ մարդը, Knorr-Bremseից գնեց ինքնաթիռների շարժիչների և գործարանային պատյանների արտադրության արտոնագրերը, ինչպես նաև ձեռք բերեց BMW ապրանքանիշը և լոգոն: Այսպիսով, BMW անվանումը վերածնվեց երկրորդ անգամ։

Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմից առաջ BMW-ն նորից սկսեց զբաղվել ինքնաթիռների շարժիչներով։ Երբ պատերազմն ավարտվեց, և Գերմանիան պարտվեց, BMW-ն ուներ արտադրական հզորություն Մյունխենում: Բիզնեսը փրկելու համար ընկերությունը վերադարձավ ավտոմեքենաներին, կարողացավ արտադրություն հիմնել և սկսեց նոր գործարաններ կառուցել:

Այսօր BMW-ն հաջողակ միջազգային ավտոմոբիլային կոնցեռն է, որի կենտրոնակայանը գտնվում է Մյունխենում: BMW-ն ունի հինգ գործարան Գերմանիայում և ավելի քան 20 դուստր ընկերություններ ամբողջ աշխարհում: Միայն 2022 թվականին BMW-ն, ըստ տարբեր գնահատականների, վաճառել է 1,9–2 միլիոն ավտոմեքենա։
