Ստեփանակերտի Աստվածածնի Հովանու մայր տաճարը քաղաքի հպարտությունն էր, նրա քրիստոնեական հավատի և ազգային վերազարթոնքի խորհրդանիշը: Այն քաղաքի ուժի կենտրոնն էր, կառուցված էր Սուրբ Զվարթնոցի նմանությամբ և հայոց ավանդական բերդերի ամրությամբ:

Պատահական չէ, որ քաղաքը զավթած թշնամական հրոսակների համար այն աչքի փուշ էր, նրա հայ և քրիստոնեական էության մասին ամեն օր հիշեցնող կենդանի վկայություն: Վերջին օրերին նրանք ավերել են այս հոյակերտ տաճարը, որի կառուցման մեջ հազարավոր հայ մարդկանց տաղանդ ու ջանք էր դրվել, որի պատերի մեջ տասնյակ հազարավոր հայ մարդիկ էին աղոթել, հազարները մկրտվել և պսակադրվել: Ավերելով այն, թշնամին փորձում է հերթական անգամ ստորացնել մեզ, խլել մեր հիշողությունը և մեր պատիվը, մեր կորուստի ցավը դարձնել առավել անտանելի:
