Ճապոնիայի հյուսիս-արևելքում 7,2 մագնիտուդ ուժգնությամբ երկրաշարժ է գրանցվել, ինչի հետևանքով նախնական տվյալներով վիրավորվել է 5 մարդ: Երկրի ազգային օդերևութաբանական վարչության տվյալներով՝ էպիկենտրոնը գտնվել է Խաղաղ օվկիանոսում՝ Իվատե պրեֆեկտուրայից արևելք, օջախը գտնվել է 50 կմ խորության վրա։

Սկզբում ճապոնացի սեյսմոլոգները երկրաշարժի մագնիտուդը գնահատել էին 6,9, սակայն ավելի ուշ այն թարմացրել են մինչև 7,2։ Ստորգետնյա ցնցումից հետո հայտարարվել էր ցունամիի վտանգ, սակայն մի քանի րոպե անց նախազգուշացումը հանվել է։

Տեղի բնակիչներին կոչ են անում պահպանել զգոնությունը. ազգային օդերևութաբանական վարչությունը նախազգուշացրել է, որ առաջիկա շաբաթվա ընթացքում հնարավոր են ուժեղ կրկնակի ցնցումներ։

Երկրաշարժը խափանումներ է առաջացրել երկաթուղային հաղորդակցության աշխատանքում, մասնավորապես՝ դադարեցվել է «սինկանսեն» գերարագ գնացքների երթևեկությունը երկրի հյուսիս-արևելյան շրջանի որոշ ուղղություններով։
