Այսօր ամանորի անբաժան մասն է կազմում եղևնին։ Դեռ հազարամյակներ առաջ աշխարհի շատ ժողովուրդներ ծառի ճյուղեր էին զարդարում տարբեր տոների ու ծիսակատարությունների ժամանակ։ Սակայն դրանք որևէ աղերս չունեն Նոր տարվա հետ։ Ամանորյա տոնածառի ծնունդը կապված է գերմանական Ռեֆորմացիայի առաջնորդ Մարտին Լյութերի անվան հետ։ Համաձայն ավանդույթի՝ նա ճրագալույցի երեկոյան տուն գնալիս հոգնած նստում է ճամփեզրի եղևնու տակ և հիանում նրա գեղեցկությամբ։ Եղևնու ճյուղերի արանքից կայծկլտում էին գիշերային աստղերը։ Այդ գեղեցկությամբ տպավորված՝ Մարտին Լյութերն իր տանը զարդարում է առաջին եղևնին։
Տոնածառի գլխի աստղը խորհրդանշում է Բեթհեղեմյան աստղը, որ առաջնորդել է մոգերին դեպի Քրիստոսի ծննդյան վայրը։ Իսկ տոնածառի խաղալիքներին նախկինում փոխարինել են զանազան մրգերը, որ Գերմանիայի բնակիչները կախել են տանը դրած տոնածառից։ Առաջին ապակե խաղալիքներն ի հայտ են եկել XVI դարում, Սաքսոնիայում։ Իսկ առաջին մեծաքանակ արտադրությունը եղել է ավելի ուշ՝ XIX դարում, դարձյալ Սաքսոնիայում։
Հետաքրքիր ու գեղեցիկ ավանդույթ կա կապված դրասանգների հետ, համաձայն որի՝ մի ծեր, բազմազավակ մի կին միջոցներ չուներ զարդարելու տոնածառը, և օգնություն է խնդրում աստծուց։ Աստված կարգադրում է սարդերին գիշերվա ընթացքում դրասանգներ գործել տոնածառի վրա։
Հայ իրականության մեջ տոնածառ, որպես այդպիսին, չի եղել, բայց հին հայերը ունեցել են ծառերի պաշտամունք։ Հիմա էլ ծիսա վայրերում զարդարվող «ցանկությունների ծառերը» հայոց հին «տոնածառերի» մնացուկներն են։
Հնուց ի վեր հայերը եղևնու փոխարեն Ամանորին զարդարել են ձիթապտղի կամ խնկի ծառը, ընդ որում՝ զարդերը եղել են բնության պարգևներ և բացարձակապես՝ բնական։
Նոր տարվա երեկոյան ձիթենու համեմատաբար հաստ ճյուղը խրել են նախապես թխված մեծ հացի կամ բաղարջի մեջ։ Այդ ճյուղը Կաղանդի ծառ է կոչվում։ Տան անդամները նախ ընկուզեղենով զարդարում էին ճյուղը, այնուհետև տանտերը ճյուղը տանում էր եկեղեցի, քահանային օրհնել տալիս, հետ բերում տուն և ամրացնում գերանին։
Տոնածառի խաղալիքները հասկերից, ընկույզներից (թվով յոթ) պատրաստված զարդարանքներ էին, որոնց վրա կախվում էին չարխափաններ, ինչպես նաև՝ մարդակերպ և կենդանակերպ թխվածքներ։
Նոր Տարվա ծառը զարդարում էին խնձորով, որը խորհրդանշում է պտղաբերություն, ցորենի հասկերով՝ ի նշան առատության, ինչպես նաև լոբու պատիճներով, որոնք ավանդաբար խորհրդանշում են ընտանիքի ամրությունը, նաև՝ մրգերով, կոպեկներով, փշերով՝ ուղղված չարի դեմ, փոքրիկ քսակներով՝ որպես առատության ու լիության խորհրդանիշ։
Կենաց ծառի կողքին կար ևս մեկ, սակայն ավելի փոքր ծառ, որի վրա մոմեր էին դրվում։ Այդ ծառը կոչվում է չաթալ ծառ։ Այն պարտադիր ամեն տարի Կենաց ծառի կողքին պետք է դրված լիներ։ Չաթալ ծառի վրա ընտանիքի յուրաքանչյուր անդամ պետք է իր համար մոմ վառեր։
