В последнем матче 18-го тура чемпионата Англии в рамках лондонского дерби "Арсенал" переиграл на своем поле "Куинз Парк Рейнджерс" со счетом 2:1. Счет открыл Алексис Санчес, но в начале второй половины "канониры" остались вдесятером после удаления Оливье Жиру. Несмотря на численное меньшинство, подопечные Арсена Венгера довели поединок до победы 2:1.
Несмотря на очевидную разницу в классе, никто и не ждал легкой победы "Арсенала". Хозяев вчерашней встречи здорово лихорадит в этом сезоне, о чем говорит хотя бы тот факт, что "канониры" после 18-ти туров находятся вне первой четверки. Команда Арсена Венгера не имеет права терять очков в ближайших матчах, поскольку главные конкуренты "пушкарей" - "Вест Хэм" и "Саутгемптон" выступают в текущем розыгрыше Премьер-лиги на редкость стабильно, особенно это касается "молотобойцев".
Стартовый натиск "Арсенала" в игре против "КПР" мог закончиться голом уже на девятой минуте, но Алексис Санчес промахнулся с пенальти. Впрочем, еще в первом тайме чилиец исправился, точно пробив головой после прострела в исполнении Кирана Гиббса. Казалось, что "канониры" без проблем доведут дело до победы, но в начале второй половины красную карточку за неспортивное поведение получил Оливье Жиру. Несмотря на это, "Арсенал" забил и второй гол усилиями Томаша Росицки. Гости ответили лишь точным выстрелом Чарльза Остина, забившего 12-й гол в этом сезоне.
"Арсенал" выиграл 2:1, оставшись на шестом месте с 30 очками. К слову, эта победа стала 400-й для Арсена Венгера в Премьер-лиге. Ранее только одному тренеру удавалось достичь такого результата - Алексу Фергюсону.
"С момента удаления мы знали, что нам предстоит битва. Это была заслуженная красная карточка, Оливье потерял контроль над собой. Удаление совершенно изменило динамику игры, ведь на тот момент мы полностью контролировали игру и чувствовали себя весьма комфортно. Оливье Жиру - тот парень, который если и совершает ошибки, то может выйти и их признать. Алексис Санчес - парень, который полон уверенности и играет действительно стильно. Он без устали трудился сегодня, забил гол сам и ассистировал в другом, поэтому мы не можем быть слишком строгими с ним и винить за нереализованный пенальти", - отметил Венгер.
Из остальных встреч 18-го тура отметим победу "Челси" дома над "Вест Хэмом" со счетом 2:0 благодаря голам Джона Терри и Диего Косты. "Манчестер Юнайтед" одолел на своем поле "Ньюкасл" 3:1, дублем отметился Уэйн Руни, а еще один гол забил Робин ван Перси. "Саутгемптон" выиграл на выезде у "Кристал Пэлас" 3:1, "Лестер" проиграл "Тоттенхэму" 1:2, "Сандерленд" проиграл "Халл Сити" 1:3, "Манчестер Сити" переиграл "Вест Бромвич" 3:1, "Бернли" проиграл "Ливерпулю" 0:1, "Эвертон" проиграл "Сток Сити" 0:1, а "Суонси" переиграл "Астон Виллу" 1:0.
