Արցունք, անեծք և արյան գետեր. այս ամենը եղել է, կա և, հավանաբար, դեռ երկար կուղեկցի ոսկե հոսքի շրջապտույտը: Սակայն չարագործությամբ ու նենգությամբ չի սպառվում փայլուն մետաղի ամենազորությունը և մոգական հմայքը...

Ոսկին մարդուն հայտնի առաջին մետաղներից է... Նրա դերն ու արժեքը արդեն մեծ էին խոր հնադարում: Համարվում էր, որ ոսկին օժտված է ոչ միայն նյութական արժեքով, այլև խորհրդավոր հատկություններով: Թշնամի ցեղի դեսպանորդի հետ ոսկե սպասքով խնջույքը համարվում էր հաշտության նշան և հավատարմության երդում: Դեսպանորդը կարող էր համոզված լինել, որ ոսկե սպասքում ուտելիքը թունավորված չի լինի, որովհետև ոսկին թույների հետ հարևանություն թույն չի տալիս:

Հնուց ոսկին օգտագործվել է որպես դեղ: ժամաանակակից բժշկության մեջ ոսկի պարունակող պատրաստուկներն օգտագործվում են բավական լայնորեն, օրինակ դրանք լայնորեն կիրառվում են պոլիարթրիտի ծանր ձևերի դեպքում: Ոսկին մարդկանց բարիք է բերում և հավատարմորեն նրանց ծառայում, չէ՞ որ այն նման է արևի, ուստի ջերմացնող ազդեցություն է ունենում մարդու օրգանիզմի վրա, ասես դեպի նա ձգում է ջերմություն, ինչը խիստ կարևոր է էներգիայի պակասի դեպքում:

Ոսկու պաշարը դարերով որոշել է պետության ֆինանսական հզորությունը: Ոսկու պատմության մեջ երկրորդ ֆենոմենը դարձավ 1848 թ. Կալիֆոռնիայի ոսկու տենդը, որն սկսվեց նրանից, երբ մի վերաբնակ, հողից սոխի գլուխ հանելիս, դուրս էր բերել «ոսկու մորուք», արմատներին բառացիորեն սփռված էին ոսկու հատիկներ: Ապա ոսկու ցոնրքներ հայտնաբերվեցին Ավստրալիայում և Հարավային Աֆրիկայում, Կլոնդայքում ու Լենայում... Ու պարզվեց, որ 1848 թվականից հետո մինչև մեր օրերը 9 անգամ ավելի շատ ոսկի է արդյունահանվել, քան մարդկության ամբողջ պատմության ընթացքում:
