Կլեոպատրայի մնայուն կերպարը իբրև հեշտանքի թունդ մարմնավորում ձևավորվել է դեռ անտիկ շրջանում: Միջնադարում Դանթեն նրան անվարան տեղադրում է դժոխքում' Շամիրամի ու գեղեցիկ Հելենայի կողքին: Պուշկինի «Եգիպտական գիշերներ»-ի Կլեոպատրան երեկոները հանձնվում է իրեն տենչողներին' պայմանով, որ լուսաբացին կսպանվեն: Նրա կերպարին բազմիցս անդրադարձել են պատմաբաններ, գրողներ, արվեստագետներ: Նրա մասին արտահայտվել են նախատինքով, վրդովմունքով, անհաշտ թշնամանքով, բայց և ակամա հիացմունքով' արժանին մատուցելով նրա վառ անհատականությանը: Այո', այդ կինն իսկապես կարող էր լինել դաժան, գոռոզ, նենգ, չարաճճի, քնքուշ, խորամանկ, սակայն ոչ երբեք' ձանձրալի ու պարզունակ:
Ի՞նչ է նրա մասին վկայում մեզ պատմությունը:
Կլեոպատրան ծնվել է մ.թ.ա. 69թ և մահացել 30թ.-ին: Նա սերում էր Պտղոմեոսների արքայական տոհմից, որի հիմնադիրը Ալեքսանդր Մակեդոնացու զինակիցն էր: Վեջինս մեծ զորավարի մահից հետո ժառանգեց փլուզվող կայսրության մասը կազմող Եգիպտոսը: ՈՒստի Կլեոպատրան իր նախնիների նման ոչ թե եգիպտուհի էր, այլ հույն:
Հոր մահից հետո նա, ըստ կտակի, պետք է ամուսնանար եղբոր հետ և նրա հետ միասին ղեկավարեր երկիրը: Մինչդեռ անչափահաս արքայազնի խնամակալների բանսարկություններով աղջիկը մեղադրվում է եղբոր դեմ դավեր նյութելու մեջ: Պատժի սպառնալիքը կանխելու համար Կլեոպատրան թաքնվում է, դառնում վտարանդի:
Այդ ժամանակ պատմական բեմի վրա հայտնվում է մի նոր գործող անձ' Հռոմի դիկտատոր Հուլիոս Կեսարը, որին պատերազմը բերել էր Եգիպտոս: Կլեոպատրան որոշում է իր բախտը հանձնել մեծն հռոմեացուն: Որպեսզի չարակամները չխանգարեն իրենց հանդիպմանը, նա դիմում է մի հնարքի. փաթաթվելով գորգերի մեջ' պառկում է նավակի հատակին: Հավատարիմ ծառաները գորգերը հասցնում են Կեսարի նստավայրը և տարօրինակ բեռը դնում նրա առջև: Շվարած հռոմեացին դիտում է, թե ինչպես ալեկոծվող գորգերից դուրս է պրծնում մի աղջիկ:
Կլեոպատրայի 20-ը նոր էր լրացել, Կեսարը' հիսունն անց էր: Արքայադուստրը, ի դեմս Կեսարի, ձեռք բերեց զորեղ պաշտպան, որը գահի համար բռնկված պայքարում ապահովեց սիրուհու հաղթանակը: Կլեոպատրան ձերբազատվեց թշնամի եղբորից (նա զոհվեց կռվում) և դարձավ Եգիպտոսի միահեծան տիրուհին:
Կյանքի աշունը թևակոխած Կեսարի համար իր նոր սիրուհու մատաղ հասակի թարմությունն ու աշխուժությունը բախտի մի պարգև էր: Նրանց մտերմությունը գնալով խորանում է և ընդհատվում միայն Կեսարի սպանությամբ:
Տարիներ անց ճակատագիրը Կլեոպատրային կրկին մի մեծանուն հռոմեացու հետ է կապում' եռապետ Մարկոս Անտոնիոսի: Գալով Կիլիկիա' նա հրամայում է Կլեոպատրային ներկայանալ ու պատասխան տալ քաղաքական մեղադրանքներին: Եգիպտուհին հայտնվում է, բայց ոչ մեղադրյալի տեսքով, այլ խրոխտ կեցվածքով' նման դիցուհի Աֆրոդիտեին: Վստահ իր թովչանքին' նա մոտենում է իր դատավորին, որն առաջին իսկ հայացքից հրապուրվում է և դառնում ամբաստանյալի երկրպագուն:
Կլեոպատրան իսկույն նկատում է, որ Կեսարի համեմատությամբ Անտոնիոսն ավելի հասարակ է և հակված հախուռն վայելքների: Որպեսզի Անտոնիոսն ավելի ամուր կապվի իրեն, խորամանկ կինը չի զսպում, ընդհակառակը' սեփական մասնակցությամբ հրահրում է նրա շվայտ վարքը: Անվերջանալի խրախճանքների մասնակիցները սիրահար զույգի գլխավորությամբ կազմում են «Աննմանների դաշինք», որի անդամները մրցում են խենթ կատակներ հնարելու արվեստում: Ճարպիկ կինն ընկերակցում էր Անտոնիոսին անգամ զուտ տղամարդկանց վայել զվարճանքներում' զառ էր խաղում, մասնակցում որսի:
Իսկ ինչպիսի՞ն էր Կլեոպատրայի արտաքինը: Գուցե դա հիասթափեցնի ոմանց, բայց աշխարհի մեծերին հափշտակող այդ կինն ամենևին էլ գեղեցկուհի չէր' բառի սովորական իմատով: Անտիկ գրողները նշում են, որ նրա դիմագծերն անթերի չէին: Դա սակայն, ոչ միայն չէր խանգարում նրա սիրային հաղթանակներին, այլև նույնիսկ ինչ-որ անմեկին հմայք էր հաղորդում նրան:
