Մարդիկ, գտնվելով անընդհատ փոխհարաբերությունների և շփոման մեջ, կազմում են որևէ սոցիալական խմբի մաս: Խմբում գտնվող ցանկացած մարդ, կամա թե ակամա, ենթարկվում է տվյալ խմբի թելադրած կանոններին:Որոշ մարդիկ կամքից ուժեղ են, չեն ենթարկվում կոնֆորմությանը, այսինքն չեն ենթարկվում մեծամասնության կարծիքին, որոշ մարդիկ էլ, ընդհակառակը, կլանվում են խմբի կողմից՝ կորցնեով իրենց անհատականությունը:Այս երևույթը սոցիալական հոգեբանության մեջ կոչվում է ապաանհատականացում (դեինդիվիդուալիզացիա): Orer.am-ը ներկայացնում է այն դեպքերը, երբ մարդիկ գիտակցաբար, իսկ երբեմն էլ անգիտակցաբար, ընկնում են ուրիշների ազդեցության տակ:
Միլգրեմն ասում էր, «որ մենք կախված ենք հեղինակություններից, նրանց մտքերից և վարքից: Այն մշակույթներում, որտեղ մեծ է հեղինակության դերը, շատ են կոնֆորմ վարքագծով մարդիկ»: Եթե այս միտքը կապենք մերօրյա սոցիալական իրավիճակի հետ, կարող ենք բազմաթիվ օրինակներ բերել, երբ դեռահասները «կուլ են» գնում հեղինակություններին: Որպես օրինակ՝ կարող ենք բերել «էմո» ենթամշակույթը: Այն առաջացել է համանուն երաժշտական ուղղվածությունից: Աշխարհում ներկայումս հաշվառվում են միլիոնավոր էմոներ: Նրանք կազմում են մեծ սոցիալական խումբ, ունեն սեփական ատրիբուտիկան, ժեստային համակարգը և այլն:
Ապաանհատականացման վառ դրսևորում է նաև ֆուտբոլային երկրպագուների կատաղությունը, հիստերիաները ռոք համերգների ժամանակ և այլն: Բրայն Մյուլենը, վերլուծելով այս երևույթները, պարզեց, որ ինչքան շատ մարդ կա ամբոխի մեջ, այնքան ավելի կատաղությամբ և չարությամբ է կատարվում չարագործությունները: Այլ խոսքերով, ապաանհատականացված մարդը, որը գտնվում է խմբային ճնշման տակ, կարող է անել այնպիսի բաներ, որն իրեն թույլ չէր տա, եթե միայնակ լիներ:
Պատմության մեջ քիչ չեն դաժանության դեպքերը, որոնք կապված են մարդու ապաանհատականացման հետ: Դիտարկենք դրանցից մեկը:
1968 թ. մարտի 16-ին վիետնամական պատերազմի ժամանակ ամերիկական զինվորների մի ջոկատ ուղղաթիռով հասցվեց Մեյ Լայ գյուղ: Զինվորները շատ էին վախեղած, քանի որ մինչ այդ պատերազմական իրավիճակում չէին եղել, իսկ ըստ տեղեկությունների՝ գյուղը լցված էր վիետնամական 48 ջոկատներով: Այս փաստն ահուսարսափ էր տարածում ամերիկացիների վրա: Ուղղաթիռներից մեկի օդաչուն ռադիոյով հայտնեց, որ հեռվում տեսնում է Վիետկոնգի ռազմական ջոկատները: Սարսափահար եղած ամերիկացիները թռան ուղղաթիռից՝ կրակելով զենքերից: Շատ շուտով նրանք հասկացան, որ օդաչուն սխալվել է. ոչ մի թշնամական ռազմական միավորում չկար: Նրանց փոխարեն ամերիկացիները հայտնաբերեցին տեղի խաղաղ բնակչությանը՝ երեխաների, ծերերի, կանանց: Անհասկանալի պատճառով ջոկատի հրամանատար Ուիլյամ Կոլին հրաման տվեց զինվորներից մեկին ոչնչացնել բնակչությանը: Մնացած զինվորները նույնպես հետևեցին նրա օրինակին: Առանձնակի դաժանությամբ սպանվեցին ավելի քան 500 խաղաղ մարդիկ: Այս դեպքը մտած է սոցիալական հոգեբանության դասագրքերում՝ որպես դասական ապաանհատականացման օրինակ:
Ինչպես տեսնում ենք՝ զինվորները հայտնվել էին սոցիալական ազդեցության տակ: Ի պատասխան սրա՝ նրանք փոխում էին իրենց վարքը, որպեսզի արդարացնեն մնացածի սպասելիքները:
