Ամեն տարի 3000-ից 5000 երեխա ծնվում է դաունի համախտանիշով: Հասարակության տեղեկացվածությունը հիվանդության վերաբերյալ բարձրացնելու, Դաունի համախտանիշով ապրող մարդկանց խնդիրները բարձրաձայնելու, հասարակությունում նրանց դերը կարևորելու և այդ համախտանիշն ունեցող երեխաների կյանքի որակը լավացնելու նպատակով ՄԱԿ-ի նախաձեռնությամբ մարտի 21-ը հայտարարվել է Դաունի համախտանիշի համաշխարհային օր: «21» թիվն ընտրված է սիմվոլիկ, քանի որ հենց 21-րդ ավելորդ քրոմոսոմն է, որ առաջացնում է այս համախտանիշը:

Դաուն հիվանդությամբ տառապող երեխաներն ավելի դանդաղ են զարգանում, քան մյուս երեխաները, բայց լիովին ունակ են սովորելու, և շատերը նույնիսկ կարող են մասնագիտություն ձեռք բերել, ունենալ ընկերներ, վարել լիարժեք և անկախ կյանք: Այդ համախտանիշով հիվանդ երեխաները նաև կարող են հասնել կյանքում լուրջ ձեռքբերումների ծնողների հոգատարության և աջակցության, բժշկական օգնության, խորհրդատվության և հասարակության կողմից աջակցության շնորհիվ: Չնայած այդ երեխաների սովորելու անկարողության վերաբերյալ տարածված կարծիքին, նրանք ամբողջապես կարող են յուրացնել ինչպես իրենց հանդեպ խնամքի հմտությունները, այնպես էլ ավելի բարդ գործողություններ: Այդ իսկ պատճառով կարևոր է, որ Դաուն հիվանդությամբ տառապող երեխաները մեծանան ընտանիքում' շրջապատված հոգատարությամբ:

Մոսկվայում գոյություն ունի աշխարհում միակ թատրոնը, որտեղ բոլոր մարդիկ ունեն Դաուն համախտանիշ: Խումբը, որը կոչվում է «Բարեհոգիներ», հաջողությամբ կազմակերպում է հյուրախաղեր' լի սրահներով:

Հայաստանում Դաունի համախտանիշով երեխաների վերականգնողական բուժումն իրականացվում է «Արաբկիր» բժշկական համալիրի «Արբես» առողջության կենտրոնում' իր մարզային մասնաճյուղերով, Հանրապետական մանկական վերականգնողական կենտրոնում' բազմամասնագիտական խմբի միջոցով, ինչպես նաև ներառական մանկապարտեզներում և դպրոցներում:

Մեր հասարակության մեջ դեռևս պահպանվում է այս հիվանդությամբ ապրող մարդկանց նկատմամբ խտրական վերաբերմունքը: Սակայն ճիշտ և ժամանակին կազմակերպված վերականգնողական բուժումը և շրջապատի վերաբերմունքի փոփոխությունը մեծապես կնպաստեն այս երեխաների լիարժեք ինտեգրմանը հասարակություն:

Դաունի համախտանիշով երեխայի ծնվելու հավանականությունն ավելի մեծ է տարիքով մեծ ծնողների մոտ: Ուստի, հիվանդության կանխարգելման նպատակով երեխայի ծնունդը պլանավորելուց առաջ զույգերին խորհուրդ է տրվում անցնել բժշկագենետիկական խորհրդատվություն:
