Ուկրաինայի հետ կոնֆլիկտի ֆոնին Ռուսաստանը ձգտում է ամրապնդել ազդեցությունը հետխորհրդային տարածքում: Նա դիրքավորվում է իբրև Եվրոպայի ու Ասիայի միջև գտնվող մեծ տերություն: Հարևան տարածաշրջաններում իր ազդեցությունը տարածելու համար Ռուսաստանն օգտագործում է 2015-ին հիմնված ԵՏՄ-ն: Ռուսաստանի հետաքրքրվածությունն այդ նախագծով միայն որոշ չափով է հիմնավորված տնտեսությամբ`  Ռուսաստանի առևտրի ծավալը միության մյուս 4 պետությունների հետ ընդհանուր առևտրի ընդամենը 6%-ն է: Կենտրոնական դերում աշխարհաքաղաքականությունն է` տարածաշրջանային ալյանսների օգնությամբ Ռուսաստանը ցանկանում է բարձրացնել իր միջազգային նշանակությունը:

Հետխորհրդային տարածքում Մոսկվան ձգտում է «պահակի» դերին, որովհետև ում է իր գոտում շարժումներին ու արգելում որևէ մեկի հեռանալը: Հատուցման վախից Ռուսաստանի հարևանները չեն համարձակվում միությունից դուրս գալ: Նրանք գիտեն` որքան մեծ նշանակություն է Կրեմլը տալիս այդ նախագծին, նրանք պարտադիր թույլ դիրքում են Մոսկվայի համեմատությամբ:

Օրինակ` Բելառուսն ամեն անգամ սպառնում է բոյկոտել ինտեգրացիոն նախագիծը, եթե Մոսկվան բելառուսական տնտեսությանը հումքը ցածր գներով չմատակարարի: Չնայած անդամակցությանը ԵԱՏՄ-ին` Ղազախստանն ու Հայաստանը գործընկերային համաձայնագիր են ստորագրել ԵՄ-ի հետ, Ղազախստանը, ինչպես առաջ, երկկողմ համաձայնագրեր է կնքում Չինաստանի հետ: Նույնիսկ եթե ճանապարհը դեպի լիարժեք տնտեսական հանրություն դեռ հեռու է, առաջին դժվարություններից հետո նախագիծը, ուժ է հավաքում` տնտեսական ցուցիչները վերև են բարձրանում, իսկ առևտուրը զարգանում է դրական ուղղությամբ: Հասարակական կարծիքի հարցումները վկայում են, որ բնակչության գերակշիռ մեծամասնությունը ողջունում է նախկին սովետական հանրապետությունների մերձեցումը:

Եթե ապագայում կնքվի Չինաստանի հետ ազատ առևտրի մասշատաբային համաձայնագիր, ոչ միայն կխթանի առևտրի զարգացումը, այլև Մոսկվայի համար կլինի քաղաքական հաջողություն: Այդպիսով Պեկինն ընդունում է Ռուսաստանի տարածաշրջանային գերակա դերը: Ինչ ուղղությամբ կզարգանա միությունը, ի վերջո կախված է նաև Եվրոպայի դիրքորոշումից: Թեպետ Ասիան մեծացնում է նշանակությունը, ԵՄ-ն առաջվա պես մնում է ԵԱՏՄ-ի կարևորագույն առևտրական գործընկերը: Բրյուսելը ԵԱՏՄ-ն համարում է ռուսական նախագիծ և խուսափում է երկխոսությունից, Ասիայում ԵԱՏՄ-ն ցանկալի գործընկեր է դառնում: Եթե առաջիկայում Եվրոպայի ու Ռուսաստանի հարաբերությունները չկարգավորվեն, առևտրական ճանապարհները եվրասիական մայրցամաքում կտեղաշարժվեն արևելք:

Եթե ԵՄ-ն որոշի երկխոսություն սկսել ԵԱՏՄ-ի հետ` ԵԱՏՄ-ի քաղաքական ու տնտեսական գոյությանան հրաժեշտությունը պարզապես կվերանա, ու դա գիտեն բոլոր մայրաքաղաքներում:
