Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմից մոտ 50 տարի անց խուլ անտառում մի տանկ է գտնվել, որը արդեն կիսով չափ թաղված էր հողի մեջ։ Դրա դռները ամուր կողպված էին, իսկ կողային հատվածում առկա էր հրանոթի հարվածից առաջացած անցք։ Երբ փորձագետները բացեցին տանկի դռները, մեխանիկ-վարորդի տեղում հայտնաբերեցին կրտսեր լեյտենանտ-տանկիստի դի։

Երիտասարդ զինվորի մոտ կար ընդամենը մեկ փամփուշտ և պայուսակ, որում դրված էր քարտեզ, աղջկա լուսանկար և չուղարկված նամակ։ Կարդալով նամակը՝ դուք չեք կարողանա զսպել Ձեր արտասուքները։

Բարև, սիրելի Վարյա։ Ցավոք, մենք այլևս երբեք չեն հանդիպի։ Երեկ՝ կեսօրին, մենք ջախջախում էինք ևս մեկ հիտլերյան շարասյուն։ Այնպես ստացվեց, որ ֆաշիստական արկը ծակեց իմ տանկի զրահը և պայթեց ներսում։ Մինչ ես տանկը անտառ էի տանում, Վասիլին մահացավ։ Իմ վնասվածքը նույնպես ծանր է։ Տխրում եմ նրա համար, որ Վասիլին մահացավ առանց հետո բառ խոսելու և չհասցնելու որևէ բան ասել Զոյայի և Մաշայի համար։ Հիմա այնպես ստացվեց, որ երեք տանկիստներից մնացի միայն ես։ Բայց հիմա արդեն լավ եմ, էլ ցավեր չունեմ, իսկ հոգիս խաղաղված է։ Շատ նեղվել եմ, որ չկարողացանք մինչև վերջ անել մեր գործը, բայց մենք արեցին այն ամենը, ինչ կարող էինք։ Մնացածն էլ մեր ընկերները կանեն և մեր հողերից կքշեն թշնամուն։ Ուզում եմ՝ իմանաս, որ առանց քեզ ես երբեք չէի կարողանա այսպիսի կյանք ապրել։ Դու միշտ օգնել ես ինձ և ոգեշնչել։ Դու մի անհանգստացի, ժամանակները կանցնեն, մարդիկ նոր քաղաքներ կկառուցեն քանդվածների տեղը և նոր երգեր կգրեն այս պատերազմի մասին, բայց և երբեք չեն մոռանան երեք տանիկստների երգը։ Դու անպայման նորից կսիրես, երեխաներ կունենաս և երջանիկ կլինես։ Իսկ ես երջանիկ եմ, որ հեռանում են այստեղից քեզ սիրելով։
