Պատմաբաններն ու հնագետները ենթադրում են, որ բիկինի տեսակի լողազգեստները գոյություն են ունեցել դեռ Հռոմեական կայսրության ժամանակներում։ 3-4-րդ դարերում Սիցիլիայում Villa Romana del Casale-ում հայտնաբերված խճանկարներում ցուցադրված են մի քանի հռոմեացի մարմնամարզուհիներ, որոնք հագել են բիկինի։ Ընդհուպ 20-րդ դարի կեսը լողազգեստը բավական խիստ տեսք ուներ և ծածկում էր մարմնի մեծ մասը։ Ժամանակակից լողազգեստի ստեղծողն է համարվում ֆրանսիացի ճարտարագետ Լուի, ով ճարտարագետ մեխանիկ էր, բայց մորից կանացի սպիտակեղենի սալոն ժառանգություն ստանալուց հետո հագուստի դիզայներ դառավ։ Ռեարը զարգացրեց մի քանի ամիս առաջ Ժակ Էյմի ստեղծած «Ատոմ» լողազգեստը։ Լողազգեստը հանրությանը ներկայացրեց Casino de Paris-ի պարուհի Միշելին Բերնադինին Փարիզի Piscine Molitor լողավազանում 1946 թվականի հուլիսի 5-ին։ Լողազգեստը կոչվեց Բիկինի ի պատիվ Բիկինի ատոլի, որտեղ ցուցադրումից չորս օր առաջ ԱՄՆ–ն ատոմային փորձարկում էր կատարել:

Մոտ տասը տարի բիկինին ժողովրդականություն չէր վայելում։ Կաթոլիկական երկրներում, ինչպիսիք են Իսպանիան, Պորտուգալիան, Իտալիան, բիկինին արգելվում էր։ Բիկինիի առաջին կիրառողներից և պրոպագանդողներից էր ֆրանսիացի հայտնի դերասանուհի Բրիջիդ Բարդոն: Բիկինիի առաջին ցուցադրման օր Հուլիսի 5-ը՝ համարվում է բիկինիի համաշխարհային օր:

Նոր մոդելի գովազդային կարգախոսը, զուգահեռ էր անցկացնում ատոմի տրոհման և նախկին մոդելի միջև (նախկին մոդելի անունը «Ատոմ» էր)՝ «Բիկինին տրոհված Ատոմն է»: Քանի որ Բիկինի ատոլում ատոմային ռումբի փորձարկում էին կատարել, սպասվում էր, որ նույն անունով լողազգեստը նմանատիպ պայթյուն կառաջացնի նորաձևության աշխարհում:
