Գրանժ ոճը (անգլ. grunge – տհաճ, զզվելի) ծնունդ է առել 20-րդ դարի վերջին՝ Ամերիկայում: Չզիջող նոնկոմֆորմիստներին բնորոշող ոճի հիմնական գաղափարը բողոքն է հասարակական նորմերի, կարծրատիպերի, նորաձևության ստանդարտների,  ժամանակակից հասարակության սպառողական փիլիսոփայության, գլամուրի, շքեղության դեմ:

Հագուստը չպետք է որոշիչ լինի մարդու կարգավիչակն  ու դերը բնորոշելու  համար, այն ընդամենը մարմինը ծածկելու գործառույթ ունի: Սա գրանժ ուղղվածության փիլիսոփայությունն է:

Հետաքրքիր է, որ ի սկզբանե լինելով նորաձևությանն ու գլամուրին դեմ` գրանժ ոճը ժամանակի ընթացքում դարձավ նորաձևության թրենդային ուղղվածություններից մեկը և ամենահայտնի աղջիկները փորձում էին հագնվել հենց այդ ոճով: Առաջինը գրանժ ոճը պոդիում բարձրացրեց Մարկ Ջեյկոբսը, 1993թ-ին:  Այս հավաքածուից հետո Ջեյկոբսը դարձավ ամենաճանաչելի դիզայները  ԱՄՆ-ում և Եվրոպայում: Պատճառը, թերևս այն է, որ մարդիկ հոգնել են ամեն տեսակ կանոններից, օրենքներից, դրեսս-կոդերից:
