Lifestyle

Vyaschaslav Ivankov looks out over the tombstones in Moscow's Vagankovo cemetery. Ivankov was a notorious Russian Mafia kingpin who operated in both the U.S. and Russia. He was nicknamed "Little Japanese" because of his faintly oriental facial features. The Russian Mafia can be traced back to the bandits of 18th century imperial Russia. As the criminals began to group together they created what was known as the 'Vorovskoy Mir' (roughly translated as Thieves' World).
A tombstone believed to belong to mobster Andrei Golubev, buried in Moscow's Lublinkoe cemetery. Golubev was assassinated in his luxury SUV in Sochi, 2009. Stalin attempted to purge the Soviet Union of criminals by sending millions to the gulags, or recruiting them to fight against the Nazis. Those who survived the horrifying conditions came back to create a thriving black market for Soviet Russia.
Vladimir Oganov, who is buried at Moscow Armenian cemetery

The collapse of the Soviet Army meant there were thousands of well-trained veterans willing to work as muscle.
A crypt believed to belong to Vladimir Barsegov in Severnoe, Rostov-on-Don. Barsegov has been linked to a group of mafia figures who operated in Sochi, in the south of the country.  Russia's geographic position between Europe, Asia and the Middle East means that the Russian Mafia can have its fingers in a lot of different pots. They can smuggle goods to the Middle East, work with heroin dealers in the South East Asia and Afghanistan, and traffic sex slaves through Europe and to America.
During the 90s, Boris Yeltsin used "shock therapy" to help liberalize the economy. This created a series of massive series of profitable avenues for the Russian Mafia, including scams, money laundering, financial fraud.

Many of the oligarchs such as Roman Abramovich, who became fantastically rich during this period, had links to Russian mobsters.
Rudolf Oganov was allegedly killed by fellow mobster Aslan Usoyan, during a bitter power struggle in the 1990s. The Russian Mafia is believed to have contacts with dozens of criminal organisations worldwide, including the Japanese Yakuza, the Chinese triads, the Italian Mafia and the Colombia and Mexican cartels.
One of the Russian Mafia's most famous recent kingpins is Seymon Mogilevich (not pictured). He was accused of defrauding investors in New York City of $150million. He's also believed to be linked to arms trafficking, prostitution and contract killings. He was arrested in 2008 in Moscow for suspected tax evasion but currently lives freely in the city.
One group called "The Brothers' Circle" is described as a "multi-ethnic criminal group composed of leaders and senior members of several criminal organisations largely based in the countries of Europe."
It's estimated that the Russian Mafia has an annual revenue of nearly $8.5billion and has upwards of 10,000 members spread across the world. However despite their shadowy global ambitions, many still opt to be as brash as possible when it is their turn to be six feet under.
The bad relationship between Putin's Russia and Europe has led some analysts  to believe that Putin is now actively courting members of the Russian Mafia to help them sows seeds of discord throughout the West.

Russia's gangsters and spies are often closely connected - a legacy of the 1990s
